pups for mahogany/koa/ebony

Hello,

I'd like to replace the stock pickups in my passive Carvin DC127 with a pair of Seymour Duncan humbuckers.

The guitar is 25" scale, neck-thru, with mahogany neck and body wings, flamed koa bodytop, ebony fingerboard, and OFR.

I play metal and shred. I wasn't sure which humbuckers would sound good with the wood combination of my axe?

Thanks :firedevil

Re: pups for mahogany/koa/ebony

Im not totally sure, as im somewhat of a pickup newb.. but I know that a Duncan JB sounds great for overall tone in Mahogany neckthrus.. Thats what im using right now..

Although, I am going to try out a Dimarzio D-Sonic. Ive heard great things about them and for metal/shred, Its worth a try.. But for all around guitar, Duncan JB is tried and true..

Re: pups for mahogany/koa/ebony

I've got a Alnico Pro in the neck and a JB in the bridge of my DC400 and it sings! :)

Re: pups for mahogany/koa/ebony

okay I bought and installed a TB-5 Custom at the bridge and a SH-2 Jazz at the neck. sounds good! the Jazz is the most perfect neck humbucker I've ever used.

but the Custom isn't "aggressive" enough for me. should I try the TB-6 Distortion next? what about the PATB-2 Parallel Axis Distortion? the description states it works "especially well with rosewood fingerboards"...my guitar has an ebony fretboard. will this make much difference?

thanks

Re: pups for mahogany/koa/ebony

The JB or Distortion will work well with the Mark IV. I would suggest the Distortion. The Distortion has a little more going on in the low mids, but is very clear with a good amount of high end, the JB I have in my Carvin sounds just a little thin.

Angry sounding = Custom < JB < Distortion.

I really like the C5, but it has a looser low end that whomps more than I would like through my Mark IV

okay I ended up putting a PATB-2 in the bridge and it's pure sickness :firedevil

thick and crunchy and grindy and LOUD!!!

sounds kickass with my Mark IV. the lead channel just screams \m/ METAL \m/ too bad my guitar is "too pretty" hehe not a sharp point on her.

Re: pups for mahogany/koa/ebony

...another PATB convert, glad you like it. They are great pups.

How do you like the high end response in that set up?

I have a PATB-2 in a alder/rosewood/maple Jackson, and I have a handful of mahogany/ebony/maple Charvels. I think that I might like the PATB-2 more in one of the Charvels. It seems just a little undefined for me in the alder/rosewood/maple.
