Pups for my LP Trad

Re: Pups for my LP Trad

What?

Ok, weight relieved with 7 non-swiss holes.

Are they?? I didnt think so. I thought thats why they were called traditional and why it weighs 9plus lbs

I mean my buds 60s gold top w/p90s weighs about 6 lbs and you can hear the ports by tapping on the back..

Re: Pups for my LP Trad

Pg neck w/ 500k

Custom Bridge w/ 300k

Play any danged thing you want with that. Try A5 in custom if that doesn't work for you.

Was kinda thinking this as the Custom covers alot of ground and I can "tune " it.. but the PG has me intrigued.

You recommend leaving both the 300k vol and tone and then changing both with the PGn?

Will there be alot of diff with the 300k on the custom?

Don't confuse chambering, with weight relieving(swiss cheese). ;)

Re: Pups for my LP Trad

I've got a PG set in my Dean EVO, which is very similar to an LP in build, right down to a really thick maple cap. I have absolutely no complaints about either pickup. When I rewired it, I went 500k pots and a mallory cap. They've got just enough bite and snarl when you add on the gain, but don't fart out and lose clarity, which really irritates me about most high output pickups. They're not compressed or mushy sounding and they're very responsive to picking and volume adjustments. After having several Duncans over the years, dam near everyone of them, I've found that they(PG's) have a dynamic to them that's all of their own.

Also, I don't sound like Billy Gibbons, neither does my guitar. The Rev sounds like the Rev with whatever he's playing or what he's playing through. As for gain, ya you're going to laugh, some of the best metal pickups I've played. If you're playing a high gain amp, you don't need a whip crack'n bridge pickup to push the front end even harder. I can plug the Dean into my triple recto or DSL and it sounds great. If switch over to my Dimarzio loaded Ibanez or EMG loaded Schecter, it's buzz city on the gain.

Listen to this Man, BR- he knows of what he speaks :D The PGs by far have the most character & depth of any of the Duncan production humbuckers. And its NOT instant ZZ top tone, buts that's available if you want it and have the right amp ;)

Unfortunately I no longer have a clip of my Starla with the PG set...

as for your LP trad- see my avatar.

Re: Pups for my LP Trad

Yeah, Im pretty much figuring on trying the PG set.. Sir Jolly has a rippin tune using them that helped.. Saw a vid on utoob of a dude ripping on a LP with a PG n and a BBQ bridge that sounded pretty killer. (I figured the BBQ would be too muddy) So if the PGb doesnt float my boat, I have a BBQ I can toss in.. (too bad its all black)

Im pretty suprised that its cheesed.. I thought they werent. thanks for setting me straight.. I feel like a tard

The 300k, IMO, on a hot sharp screamer bridge, just takes the right amount of edge off. That little extra "something" that makes them perfect and musical.

500k neck for the pg, 300k for the custom.

If you are going with the PG set, I say 500 on both - but listen first. You might still want to leave the 300k on the bridge. I'm generally a fan of "You can always turn it down, but you can't add it back.

Re: Pups for my LP Trad

Thanks Aceman! Guess the only way to know it try both ways, since Im not familiar with the PG.
I did get one ordered on EbAY for $68. gonna have to wire it into the stock pots and all cuz I cant afford to change em right now.

Re: Pups for my LP Trad

Ijust happened to think.. Has Gibs always used 300k? Cuz the PG was designed to purposefully sound like the 59 LP. So, was the tone designed around 500k, or 300k? I just wanna make sure Im getting the most out of the guitar and pup. I really want this to be my main axe. Thanks!

Gib used 300ks on a lot of the "regular" line guitars. The Customs or Custom shop models a lot of times got 500k. My 86 LP Custom came stock with 500k, but my 61 Reissue SG had 300ks.

Oh, and the difference between the LP Traditional and the current Standard is the neck shape. The Traditionals have the old-school 50 or 60 shape and the current Standard has an asymetrical shape.

As far as pickups, I had a JB in my LP for YEARS and it sounded badass with my Old QR/PM setup. Though, I am in your boat as well.....thinking of trying the PGs or the CC or the Bro. I'm so confused. Mine is a little on the brighter side for an LP.

Re: Pups for my LP Trad

I got my pedal board finished today and was testing it out.. was playing the LP and just not feeling it. pulled out the Charvel and ZOOWIE!! I figured out why Im not gelling with the paul.. the tone is too dark.. Im sooo hoping the gates with crispen it up, yet retain the LP growl..

One of my fav LP tones is Syke's on the snake stuff. The solo for hear I go again sounds soo good..

Re: Pups for my LP Trad

You're using a Splawn and thinking you won't have enough gain? hahaha

It took me some time to get the Ants dialed in (had to lower the neck pickup a bit and raised the bridge pickup so high i had to pull the cover off to keep the strings from buzzing) but now that they're in I won't ever change them.

Perfect perfect perfect. I use a Box of Rock and play primarily hard rock'n blues stuff with it...metal is easily in reach if i boost the Box of Rock with an 808 or similar...my Les Paul lacks nothing.

Just my .02

And that solo was played by Adrian Vandenberg...in fact the only thing he did on the actual album. Sykes was already out, and Coverdale needed a solo for that song.

Here is why I say that.. Ive tried a 59 in the bridge, Dim PAF and PAF pro and they bored me. I put an AIIP set in the LP studio I used to have and I had to raise the bridge pup so high in order to get any beef out of it, that it killed my sustain cuz the magnets too close to the strings.. loved the AIIp in the neck, but couldnt use one in the bridge.. works for lots of guys, so I cant figure if I was doing something wrong or what..

Re: Pups for my LP Trad

I just re-worked my Trad-Pro......pics and a thread coming soon to a forum near you!

Re: Pups for my LP Trad

If you do change to 500k pots MAKE SURE YOU CHANGE THE CAPs TO .047!!!

Sykes now uses 57 classics. So anything you've heard like Bad Boys live in Japan is not Dirty Fingers.

I think you'd like the 59b with 500k pots into that splawn. If that doesn't do it change the mag to an UoA5.

Re: Pups for my LP Trad

The pots in my Trad Pro are 500k from the factory........At least the volume is.....

I took the push/pull pot for the bridge volume out and replaced it with a regular 500k pot. I have no use for the split bridge and I have plans for the pot I took out.......

It says "A500k" on the side.........

Thread soon! I hope!!!!!
