Pups for Samick AV3?

Hi,

Newbie here!

I recently picked up a MIM 60th Anni Std Strat, so I'ld like to upgrade the AV3. My issue is, will upgrading the pups make a major difference in tone? I mean, putting SDs in an Indonesian guitar, is it worth it? Should I just upgrade into an Epi?

Anyway I like the feel of my AV, if putting SDs in it will improve it by leap and bounds, I'll do it.

I just have a VOX AD30 amp, nothing fancy. I play Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Page, Clapton the most.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

p/s btw the avion 3 is mahogany. the av1 and av2 is nato.

Re: Pups for Samick AV3?

It should make a noticeable difference in tone. My band has a Samick endorsement so I've played lots of their guitars with Duncan Design pickups and I've put real Seymour Duncans in all the ones I've kept. Real Duncans are clearer and more defined to me. The Duncan Designed weren't horrible but they definitely all had a fuzzy, unfocused quality. All of the guitars we received have been Korean and not Indonesian but we've gotten a few really nice instruments. If yours is a decent sounding guitar acoustically you may really notice a difference. It's certainly worth the effort and money in my opinion.

I've played a few Samick instruments and they vary but they are capable of making a nice piece of wood anywhere in the world.

If it feels good and you can tune it the electronics and strings are all that can make the difference, so if you like the feel of the instrument go for it.

After that it's your fault ;-)

They aren't the biggest makers of guitars in the world just on price.

Due to how much that amp will color/flavor your tone, I would suggest against wasting money on upgrade pickups.

You can dial in, pretty much, every change that the pickup would make. That said, you may like a pickup change, but I think the difference through that amp will be minute.

I have that exact same amp for practice, that's why I'm saying that.

Hmm.. so is that a good thing (good modelling amp) or a bad thing (low quality amp that any upgrade to the guitar would be insignificant)?

Thank you for more of your feedback!

Re: Pups for Samick AV3?

The point Memphis is making is that your amp will not respond that differently to different pickups, guitars, etc. which is kind of an issue with modelling type amps. A tube-type amp doesn't process the raw sound of a guitar as much as a digital modeler so the actual tone of a particular guitar is much more noticeable on that type of amp. For instance, with a moderately high amount of gain on a Line 6 Pod the tone differences between a strat and a Les Paul are much less noticeable than if you ran both through a Marshall JCM 800. That doesn't mean you won't hear a difference so it's a matter of opinion on whether it is worth it or not to make a pickup switch. I think it's a relatively cheap attempt at upgrading your tone and I would certainly try it before getting a completely different guitar.
