pups with nickle/gold covers

Re: pups with nickle/gold covers

I think you might not be able to get as much brightness and output because the poles can't get as close to the strings.

is there any tonal differences between the 59's with nickle or gold covers ($90) and the regular 59's($70)?

If you write to Duncan's tech, they'll say no, and I don't see any reason why we should say otherwise :D

Re: pups with nickle/gold covers

You won't hear any difference between the gold and nickel covers...You will pay more for the gold though!

Re: pups with nickle/gold covers

No difference between nickle and gold but there is a difference between covered and uncovered...it is a very slight difference but it's there.

True, a covered pup will tame some of the high freqs, unless this is adjusted for in the wind of the pup.

See I've never bought into this and I've used humbuckers with and without covers...I think what we think we hear is less dampening of stray frequencies and more noise, but I've yet to actually hear "brighter" with the cover off....Even the folks at Duncan say no difference, but Page,Beck, and other guys used to pull the covers and I Know there was a reason for it? :beerchug:

I prefer covers on all of my Gibson type guitars but not in a strat..

Re: pups with nickle/gold covers

I will say this...I do notice a very slight difference in covered and un covered but I have found that it is a more noticeable difference if the pickup is not wax potted.

I'm not really disputing so much that you guys don't hear the differences in the highs, but I don't....:beerchug:

Interesting stuff, SD97. So, I guess the Million Dollar Question is: What difference does a cover make, if at all?

One would think that if you put a sheet of metal between the slug side of a humbucker (since most covered pups have the screws exposed) that the magnetic field would be altered, and hence the response of the pup across certain frequencies.

The covers were put on to help with noise, protection and the antenna effects of pickups and lighting and stray noise etc...after that,it was for cosmetic reasons...I Like covers because of the cosmetic reasons and it helps protect the exposed coils from sweat...I've tryed covers and no covers and I swear that anything I've ever thought I heard was physcological....Maybe I'm wrong but it's just me? :laugh2:

I've read somewhere on Duncan's site, that the guys or Seymour himself, stated no differences between cover or no cover, but again I reinforce that alot of the early rockers removed the bridge covers on their LPs.....

Hmmm, that's really interesting. I feel an experiment coming on, but I can't afford 2 sets of BKs just for testing!! lol

It's a very hard test and you'd have to use the same guitar, same pickup location and be able to quickly A/B the 2 tones, unless you recorded the tones, but I'd bet the recording would sound the same....I'd be willing to bet that anything you thought you really heard was purely cause you wanted to hear a difference....Maybe these older rockers thought it looked cool to remove the covers? Jimmy Page had covers on all of his LPs except for one though and he said the cover fell off...:laugh2:
