Pure 62 Strat Tone ?

Re: Pure 62 Strat Tone ?

I am not sure if i am getting carried away. That sounds like pretty standard strat tones to me. That´s pretty much what i got from the stock alnico 3´s of my highway 1 except they didnt sound that great.

But i couldnt agree more. Doesnt matter is it isnt 100% perfect, it jut needs to sound damn good.

Only problem for me is i now understand i need to dig even deeper into vintage pickups to know what i really need. Because to be honest at this point i dont see much difference between most pickups offerd than texas type pickups being fatter and hotter.it seems to me every manufacturer has its own texas, "50´s", 60's and hendrix type i guess i'm gonna need to just try one.

I'm going to send an email to DAllen and see what he has to say, and order a set of surfers.
I'm just too curious.

Re: Pure 62 Strat Tone ?

Squier Japan 62 type
If its juts a workhorse, juts let it be a workhorse. Its not worth worrying too much about the right period correct pickups for a guitar like that because it will never be a period correct guitar sound.
You can't go too far wrong with regular Duncan ssl-1's tho.

what amp are you using?

I'm using a koch studiotone. Best clean one i've heard and most versatile overdriven sounds.

Someone who has a similar guitar recommended me the ssl1´s too. i am not really into vintage correct i just want great strat pickups.

Mojosman i went on the Dallen websiteband was blown away by the "dover" pickups videos.
Starting to get excited about it.

Re: Pure 62 Strat Tone ?

Don't forget the V60 pickups from BG-Pups. Talk to Bryan and he could custom tweak your set to what you want.

See, that is what I meant about I didn't know what tone you had in your head. I would not have reccomended that set, because I'm not a fan of that whole "scooped" mids sound. Not my thing. But he doesn't make them all for me. He has a set for everyone. I want to try a couple different sets. Mostly the Austin Blues. I like that Jazzy tone SRV had on songs like Chitlins Con Carne, and Riviera Paradise. That set seems to catch that vibe. Another set was a set called Johnny Blades. They were made for Johnny Hiland. They are a strat sized bladed humbucker with a unique tone. I wish I bought some when I was thinking of it. He stopped them because they were labor intensive, and expensive. He said he has another generation of them coming out soon. Maybe I will ask him to make me a custom set at some point. I have nothing like them. Check out the video of them:

yes these are great pups. Balanced, chimey, articulate and fat. Cant really ask for much more than that. Ive tried many many sets from many different makers in not only my strat but installed in others strats too. The ssl-1s are my fave by quite a long way. I should say tho...i have not yet tried any of teh antiquity models, and ppl often rave about the surfers.

Re: Pure 62 Strat Tone ?

I have highest regard for Surfers. They are why I'm here probably. Many years ago a band mate loaded some into a regular American Standard and it turned that guitar into a vintage tone machine. Everybody noticed it. He later switched to Fralins, which were also good, but to my ears he lost something there. Another old guitar player I knew had a real 62 strat that he actually displaced the stock pickups with Surfers.

Great to see Lew chime in. I take notes when he starts talking about strats.

Re: Pure 62 Strat Tone ?

Yeah Lake Placid, great to see lew with his real vintahe strats, you and everyone actually. This topic got me excited about several sets of pickups and about stratocasters in general.

I now understand tht vintage tone can mean many diffrent things, there is no "standard" of what a vintage 62 tone means. I'm gonna have to try.

I've decided to try one set from Duncan and one from DAllen see which fits the best.

From DAllen it´s gonna the Dovers. Mojosman it´s not really the tone i had in mind, but i was blown away by the videos.
Btw hard to believe the pickips in the video your posted are rails.

Duncans...
Ssl1 or Surfers ??
Or maybe a combination ?
Could go surfer neck, ssl1, and maybe ssl5 in the bridge ?

Orange, good luck. I hope that you end up with that tone you are hearing in your head. The bad thing about pickups is that you can't try them on like pants or a shirt, to see which ones fit best. You may end up buying more than one set before you find what you seek. So choosing is hard. But for me, the hunting and researching is part of the fun. In my case. I knew what I wanted, and David directed me to the exact set I needed. In the end, I couldn't be more satisfied. The thing with the videos on the various sites is they use amazing players, and they can make most anything sound great. D. Allen uses a guy on many videos named Tony Sims who has the touch. He plays a Squier Classic Vibe Strat in one video loaded with a set of Allen pickups through a little amp. Sounds fantastic. Hand me that guitar a second later, and it won't sound so great. But his products are the real deal, and he delivers what he promises.

Those rails do sound great. I wasn't even looking for anything like that. But the videos just sounded fantastic.

I want a set just for the versatility. Maybe I will look for a cheap used Strat with a neck I like, and upgrade it with those. But like I said earlier I don't really need another Strat. I just love that tone.

Re: Pure 62 Strat Tone ?

This topic is getting really interesting.
I actually have no idea what a real vintage 62 strat is supposed to sound like,
and as lewd guitar mentioned the squier japan isnt really going to sound the same.

Just for the record, Lew isn't nearly as lewd as he used to be. :D

(Lew: Great to see you again man.)

Orange please let us know when you make the purchase, which set you settled on, and how that you like them.

Re: Pure 62 Strat Tone ?

After many sleepless nights i set my mind on the d.allen dovers.
First i absolutely love the EJ tone, but i dont play this kind of music much.

However the 2 videos where tony sims play lead me to believe this set is exaclty what i had in mind for this guitar. The set sounds awesome on rosewood board squier bullet with a tube screamer and fender blues, which is similar to what i play (dod overdrive and koch studiotone).

I'm gonna order it tomorrow but i cant install it until december.
I'll let you know and maybe do a video.

In the meantime i'll also get a lace hot gold and silver to compliment the res on my highway1. Pickup swapping must be some kind of addiction. Just when i thought i was done with humbuckers (pearly gates+superV best set ever); now comes the strat and i guess my telecaster is next.
