Put a roughcast A5 in a Pearly gates Bridge today....

And to be honest I'm not too impressed. The bass is tighter yes, it has a little more punch yes, but the aggressive mids are gone, the highs are sort of brittle, and it's kinda lost its mojo and the the incredible in between tones that Zenmindbeginner so eloquently spoke of are not the same. So the A2 is going back in!! Honestly it reminded me a little of a Burstbucker Pro, if I wanted that A5 tone, I think just going with a 59 bridge would be better. guitar was a 90's Gibson LP studio.

Roughcast A4 certainly would be. :approve:

If it was me, I'd try an A3 on that PGn. Even complexer harmonic rendition and the sweetest but extremely articulated pick attack. What's not to like?

HTH,

EDIT: OH MAN! My reading skills are failing me... it's now that I've realized you're talking about a PG BRIDGE.

Then I have to agree with Demanic and the UOA5... which will pair a lot better with a PGn if it's A3 modded, as I've suggested earlier.

Sorry about that. I'll put myself in the corner in shame.

Damn you Guys, I've got roughcast A4 and polished A3 laying around! Now you got me thinking about throwing those mags in and giving it a whirl... I've got limited playing time with a new baby and super busy at work and I vowed to play more and tinker less!

The PG pickup set is voiced around the Alnico II magnet... it won't sound as good with anything else.

UOA5 won't bring back the aggressive mids he lost with an A5 and the highs will be better than A5 but not as good as A2.

The PG set isn't a great modding platform IMHO... it's one of those recipes that is just right and doesn't need anything. It has it's trade-offs and strengths like any other pickup.

By remedying weaknesses you end up reducing it's strengths. No pickup is perfect and you just use the one that's voiced right for the job at hand.

I really like my PG bridge with an A8.

This is not surprising as the alnico 8 bring the best of A2 ( smooth leads ) , A5 ( tight basses BUT without mid scoop ) and Ceramic ( power ) ,
I stopped myself on Jazz 8 neck and Demon 8 , with some more tweaks .

So, if you modded a PGb with an A8, what would you do to the PGn to match?

Re: Put a roughcast A5 in a Pearly gates Bridge today....

You could a4 the neck, that might help (correct me if I'm wrong but I think a4 delivers more output than a2)

How does changing the magnet in the neck pickup help at all with the tone of the bridge pickup? Maybe he's happy with the tone of his neck pickup

That's the question I answered. Op can keep the pickup as is if he likes the tone but to match output is what I was thinking.

Gotcha but a2 to a4 is a neglible increase in output. A half turn on the height screws would make a larger difference. There is also no way to increase the output with the magnet without changing the tone

Re: Put a roughcast A5 in a Pearly gates Bridge today....

Gotcha. I was under the impression a2's were noticeably weaker than a4's. Good point

That's faulty logic. The SH-5 was voiced for a ceramic magnet, and yet Duncan introduced it two more times with an A2 and A5, and members have had great results with A8's, UOA5's, and A4's. The Jazz set was voiced for A5's, yet Duncan put in A2's and introduced it as the A2P.

Funny you mentioned logic because you have performed a feat of logical fallacy this afternoon. I by no means presented a "logic" where I inferred that all pickups shouldn't be modded.

I was specifically talking about the Pearly Gates and it's not a normal pickup... it was modeled after a specific set of pickups from Gibbons' Les Paul. That's not how the Custom was created and it lends itself to a variety of other magnets and there are other pickups that share the Custom's versatility... just not the Pearly Gates.

You've cooked up a polemic debate based on a strawman fallacy and I don't really appreciate it.

What PU's aren't wound with a particular magnet in mind? They're designed with particular voicing goals, and they the wind and magnet work together to accomplish that. That some also work well with other magnets is an unintended byproduct. The Custom wasn't wound with other magnets in mind, members did that on their own and Duncan liked what they did, just as they liked a member's experiments with the '59/Custom hybrid. They're not designing any PU's so we can take them apart and mix and match parts. A 'happy accident' when it works out, as Keith Richards would say.

You're saying that Duncan PU's 'modeled after specific pickups' of a certain artist won't sound good with any other magnets? That's quite a statement. No reason to get huffy if someone questions that.

Gibson pafs from the 50s/60s ;)

There's been hundreds of HB models made since then, and a number of them were made to sound like specific earlier PU's; hard to believe that whole group does poorly with different magnets. What actually may be happening is that some winds in certain guitars work happen to with more replacement magnets more than others; luck of the draw. The reason why the wind was designed like it was is probably not the biggest factor. I've read posts of members over the years who've swapped mags in PG's and liked the results.
