Put a roughcast A5 in a Pearly gates Bridge today....

Re: Put a roughcast A5 in a Pearly gates Bridge today....

A UOA5 won't bring back aggressive mids, but there will be more mids than with the A5. The top end will be more rounded than an A5 and not as shrill, but still not as thick as the A2. I still think it's a good vote. Especially if it's roughcast. If not that, then maybe a roughcast A4.

+1. UOA5's are pretty close to A2's (more so than any other magnet), and I'll swap them back and forth with A2's.

You're saying that Duncan PU's 'modeled after specific pickups' of a certain artist won't sound good with any other magnets?

Absolutely not and I am talking specifically about the Pearly Gates. Gibson wound their pickups haphazardly and fairly randomly in the '50s and '60s. So when you got a magical pickup or set of pickups like in Pearly's case, it was a "happy accident" or good luck. The "magic" of a pickup is a specific and pleasing combination of wind+materials+magnet. Changing ONE thing can take the magic away.

And 'changing one thing' can add magic, as numerous players have proven, and Duncan's put some of those member changes into production. To you, PG's are a 'magical' PU; for me, Seth's fit that category, (I could never bond with PG's or '57's). Whatever the HB, someone somewhere has probably changed magnets in it and thought it sounded better. What's 'magical' is a matter of individual taste, not fact, and the guitar and gear are also part of the equation. It's a combination of variables, and in some situations the stock magnet isn't always the best fit.

Yeah. The 'magic' of the PG is part PG, and part what the Rev did with them. But all that REALLY matters is if you like them or not. The real art of giving advice on pickups is not telling people what YOU like - but telling them what they need, regardless. I just told someone Full Shred neck and Jazz Bridge. I'd NEVER use that. I wouldn't use it for what they were doing if I did it. But it was the right advice for them.

I think PG's are just awesome in every way all around. For a lot of fairly objective reasons, but also number of subjective ones. But that's me. For others, it's the 59, for some the Seth, others the WLH, and for others still, the A2P.
