Put a set of '59/Jazz pickups in my PRS SE Santana

I put the pickups in my PRS SE Santana last night. I replaced the Dimarzio PAF Master pickups I had in it with these. The PAF Masters are good pickups, but a touch bright. So far I love the 59/Jazz pickups with their thicker tone. Looking forward to trying these out at my next band practice.

Did something similar with my PRS SE hollowbody, swapped out the stock pickups for covered Burstbucker Pro's. Tamed the brittle high end, and sweetend up the mids and lows...

Wow! Awesome looking guitar! Let us know how she does at practice.

Nice. I see you have the roughcast, I mean satin, saddles. Those sound good. I made a 59/Jazz hybrid today, sounds good too.

So far I'll say that at least the '59 is a big improvement in the sound I'm wanting from this guitar compared to the PAF Master bridge. I did like the PAF Master neck pickup tho as it was lower output and good clarity. The Jazz seems to be higher output and quite a bit warmer sounding so far. Not bad, but it makes me consider putting the PAF Master neck back in...

That is a nice looking guitar for sure

Thanks. It's just a SE Santana Standard, but I love the clean look of just the mahogany wood grain with the clear finish and the chrome covered pickups. Very sharp looking IMO.

Looks killer indeed.

I had that combo on my PRS SE Nick Catanese for a while too. The Jazz compliments the '59 in the bridge nicely, and I feel it's a much better match for the shorter scale length, mahogany body, and 22 fret neck pickup position than the '59 in the neck.

I figured a '59 in the neck would be possibly too warm sounding, but surprisingly this Jazz is warmer than I thought it would be.

Yes, I assembled a 59/Jazz hybrid from a stock 59 and stock Jazz. Hybrids work very well in the neck if it's too warm and smooth. Gives more single coil cut.

I couldn't do that...I can barely solder in pickups when I replace them.

Haha oh noo! You probably could though. I have neurological shakes that act up when I do fine motor tasks like soldering but I've still managed to get pretty good at it. My first time changing 1 pickup took me 2 hours and I was wondering if I was even going to be able to do it. Now after practicing, wiring is one of my favorite things to do.

The complete 59 Set sounds good in one too. So does a set of Seth Lovers.

Re: Put a set of '59/Jazz pickups in my PRS SE Santana

There seems to be some confusion in this thread. Has the OP install a 59 bridge and a Jazz neck, or a pair of 59/Jazz hybrids ? (and indeed, the 59/Jazz hybrid is not a production model, the only way to get them is to make them).

Sorry for any confusion. I installed a '59 in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck. No hybrids.

Re: Put a set of '59/Jazz pickups in my PRS SE Santana

I'm curious about the 59/Jazz hybrid, in my experience a Jazz sounds about as single-coil as a humbucker can, and a 59 is a bassier, slower attack pickup that doesn't much resemble a single. Seems not intuitive that the hybrid would get closer to a single than a regular Jazz.

Re: Put a set of '59/Jazz pickups in my PRS SE Santana

Yes, it's very nice. Parallel gives a rich and crisp tone. Series gives a warm and bassy but very accurate classic tone. You can really hear the positives from each coil clearly. It's classy.

Oh it took me a moment to realize what you meant. Yes you're right, the hybrid isnt as immediate as the jazz on it's own but it has more complexity to it like all hybrids.

I finally had a chance to really test this guitar out with the 59/Jazz pickups and they sounded absolutely amazing. Great tones and good output from them both.
