Put Duncan Distortion SH-6B in my Lespaul bridge!

hey guys,
hows it going? wow, been a while since I've been here. Hope all you guys are doing good.

I finally got a chance to install the Duncan Distortion SH-6B that I got in a trade for my Duncan Custom in my Lespaul.

All I can say about this pickup is WOW. I think I am done with pickups. I really like this pickup and the way it sounds.

my rig is:
ADA MP-1 3TM modded (www.adadepot.com)
Carvin T100 (with EL34s)
Marshall JCM800 straight 412 cabinet

This replaced the Duncan Custom Sh-5 that i had in there, which replaced the stock Epiphone pickup.

Clean sounds - it sounds like its a very useable pickup. I use the SolidState vocing on my MP-1 for cleans and even at high volumes, it kept the signal clean with very minimul distoriton, even to a point of none. But keep in mind that I am not a picky guy with clean sounds, but its very useable sound.

Crunch distortion - Man it sounds awsome here. Crunches up nicely, cleanly. When I play the starting riff for AcDc - Highway to Hell, it sounds just awsome. just a mean crunchy sound. Works very well for ZZ Top Type riffs (Think riffs from the song Tush).

Heavy rythm distortion - This is where this pickup rules most. The overall heavy distortion sound is alot better, crunchier, heavier and it added more "chug" to the sound definitly. It added this I guess we could call "frequency" that made my tone even better. Its definitly aggressive under highgain sounds. It definitly doesnt lack the Lowend and isnt rich of highend to a point of harsh. I guess I could say its almost a "balanced" type pickup for highgain.

Lead Sounds - On this sound, I tend to use more mids then my Heavy rythm sounds and all I can say is nice. Note seperation is excellent and sustain is awsome.

My overall opinion? As mentioned above, I think i am done with pickups. This is "the" pickup for me.

How does it compare to the Duncan Custom Sh-5? well, they're sorta 2 different pickups. The Distortion has a bit more highend and a tad more lowend in my opinion, but neither is lacking at all. In my opinion, I find the Distortion to sound "better" then the Duncan Custom.

The tone on this isnt honky, harsh or muddy. It added a bit of "thickness" to the overall tone and it very "organic" sounding pickup.

Feel free to ask questions guys.. I'd be happy to help if i can.

Hope that helps,
Duke

Interesting . . . you swapped a Custom for a Distortion, today I swapped a JB for a Custom, to go in with a Distortion. They play great together.

Nice review, though. Its always cool to find just that right combo. ;)

yeah.. I liked the Duncan Custom SH-5, but I thought I could use a bit more output, more "chug" and a bit more brightness and the Distortion definitly did the trick.

I may add that the Duncan Distortion is definitly a tight sounding pickup and it retains clarity even when playing fast stuff.

Now all i need is to find a good neck pickup to go along with the Distortion. any suggestions? I was thinking of going with the Jazz neck.

I am glad that you like it bro :) I agree that it's a very cool pickup.. the crunch is especially crunchy :D

Re: Put Duncan Distortion SH-6B in my Lespaul bridge!

Artie, you're using a distortion neck with a custom bridge

my question is - which would be better for that modern rock tone in the bridge of a lp style guitar and a prs standard (al lmahogany) style

i need 2 bridges and 1 neck pickup for the neck of the prs style all mahogany

Yeah.. that seems like a good choice to go with.

Man.. I played with the Distortion again and I just love it more and more. The pinch Harmonics just scream on it without having to even put too much effort into it.

I haven't heard the SH-6B, but you describe it as the perfect pick up. I'd definately like to hear its range clarity with my own two ears. Sounds like you upgraded yourself to the ideal rig.

Re: Put Duncan Distortion SH-6B in my Lespaul bridge!

Very nice review of an awesome pickup made by Seymour Duncan. It's been by far, one of my favorites for years as thats all I knew until I started swapping pickups left and right once I found this place. All I know is I keep coming back to the DD.

Re: Put Duncan Distortion SH-6B in my Lespaul bridge!

I am not suprised you were floored by the mighty DD

Re: Put Duncan Distortion SH-6B in my Lespaul bridge!

hmmmmm..... Good review. I'm stuck between the Custom (SH-5) and Distortion (SH-6) to put in the bridge of my 2004 Gibson Les Paul Standard that I'm getting in one week from today....... :) :32:

well, I guess it would be the "perfect" pickup for me. Hey, you might not like it and you might like it, the only way to know is to try it :). As mentioned above, the SH-6B added this thing/frequency to my tone that just gave it a bit of thickness, tightness and chug to the sound.

Both are awsome pickups.. but I felt the SH-6B had a bit more "useful" highs, while the SH-5 sorta sounded like it had a bit more of the low-mid type of frequency, which sorta resulted is sometimes a tad muddy tone on the low notes. But again, I play Heavy Metal and other Metal related type of music (no death or black), which is why the Sh-6 is more for me. I'd say definitly give the Sh-6 a try in your Lespaul.

Hope that helps

Wow, I just wrote a thread about this very thing. I have also found the low end chug of the custom to be a little weak, especially when compared to my wolfgang bridge pup. I may have to pick me up a DD.

I was thinking about that exact combo for my new USA Custom I'm going to get.

Re: Put Duncan Distortion SH-6B in my Lespaul bridge!

Just got home from my first show with the TB-6 Distortion bridge. WOW. I usually dont like a super hot pickup but this one sounds very audible compared to the patb2 I have. I was into the C5 for a while but I really like this PUP. it growled with my Mesa rectifier and the musical feedback I could get was beutiful. It really made the nuances of songs easier. The chunk was untouchable. I tried the SH-6 in my ol shcecter before going on this pickup/tone search. I didnt care for it in that guitar as it was a brighter guitar than my LP. I got a nickel covered version this time and it seems a little more toned down in the highs and also doesnt seem as compressed as I remember. I am happy now. 2 of my guitar buds have been swearing by the distortion for a while now and think I am nuts for buying all these pickups. Maybe they are right? Other pups I like are the C5, , BLUES PATB3. I also really like the patb1 in my Ibanez and I could deal with the amount of gain in that PUP too PROBABLY BETTER THAN THE TB-6. Anyway, another thumbs up for the Distortion.

Re: Put Duncan Distortion SH-6B in my Lespaul bridge!

I always used a Duncan Distortion in the bridge of my Les Paul when I played mostly metal. Now, my tastes are more in the classic rock vein, so a Custom 5 is more suited to my style.

Re: Put Duncan Distortion SH-6B in my Lespaul bridge!

I've always heard nothing but good things about the DD in a Les Paul. I guess that's just another pickup I need to buy.:smack:
