Putting A Name On My Headstock

Alright, so I've stripped and repainted my guitar, and now it's time to name her. I was originally planning to just have a custom truss rod cover, but I figured... I already repainted the entire guitar, why not go all the way with it and put the name across the headstock, like Les Paul did? That leads me to my question: what recommendations would you guys have? Is there a way to paint it on while still staying smooth? Ie, not having ripples and bumps that will show up when it's glossed over? I know a decal would give me a perfectly smooth surface, but that just seems like a lot of hassle to go though. Maybe some kind of paint pens or something?
Thanks guys!

This is not religious, but I always though, Priest Guitars, sounded cool.

I saw a great method once ---

1) Waterslide, with just the outline of the letters you want, a la Fender.

2) Fill in the outline with a silver or gold paint pen, being careful not to go outside the lines, but it's ok to accidentally paint on the line itself.

3) Put another waterslide of the outline on top of the filled in outline.

This will yield a very sharp and professional metallic-filled outline look, just like the the Fender logos.

I really liked this tutorial. Hope it helps.

You could use a paint stencil, but that will give you the raised letters that you don't want. Unless, you did a lot of clear and sanding to smooth it out.
