Q for Reggie(Ginormous)?

Reg, My bass player in my blues band desperately needs a new small combo bass amp!. Not a lot of slap or anything needed. Just a nice round, warm, deep, almost acoustical tone. He's a good player, but knows no more than me about new bass equip.. I'm thinking maybe an Ampeg w/ blue diamond tolex or something. We don't play that loud, so I'm thinking 150-200 watts will be plenty. I've always liked the sound of a good Ampeg bass amp. What do you think Reggie(or any other bass player)? Thanks, Randy

Re: Q for Reggie(Ginormous)?

Do you guys use a PA? If so, it might be more practical to have your bassist use a direct box into the console. If not, then Ampeg has a couple combos that aren't too cumbersome or bad sounding: BA115, BA210 just off the top of my head. Gallien-Krueger makes a couple of nice combos, a bit pricier. The Phil Jones line is interesting as well. If you really want to drop some cash and sound good go for an Eden amp, several different models.

Re: Q for Reggie(Ginormous)?

as a brit i'd say ashdown or hunt for an old trace elliot.. i spent $240 and got a peavey mark VIII head and 210TVX cab, and they serve me great though! i think they're 300w.. just remember you can have a bass amp sounding great at 1/10 volume, it's not like the poweramp drive on guitar amps!

i've only ever gigged with one ampeg, a freakin' huge SVT with an 8x10 cab - just make sure you play before you buy, bass amps are often love-them-or-hate-them things with voicings :)

Re: Q for Reggie(Ginormous)?

The Trace Elliott is a good idea, except over the years, I've seen "ALOT" of them go down right in the middle of a gig. They sounded great and had alot of punch etc.but I'm looking for more of a traditional sound. Deep, but not ball shaking DEEP!!!!

My $.02:

Ampegs are cool. I have a BA-112 that does me well for practice and small gigs; line out quarter-inch can go into the FOH system if needed.

Keep an eye out for the BA-500; they've been discontinued, but they might be still lurking around in some places. 2x10 500 watt combo amp with graphic EQ.

Of course, my "bucket list" dream rig will always be...

Re: Q for Reggie(Ginormous)?

Re: bass amp loudness -- of course, it's always better to have more power in a smaller package; the laws of physics dictate that the same volume (dB) requires more amp power for lower tones than for higher ones.

Re: Q for Reggie(Ginormous)?

i really like the ampeg b100r for a smaller portable combo with a warm tone but its only 100w. it does have a (unbalanced) line out so you can run it into the pa if you need to.

ive heard great things about the new b200, 220w into 1x15" and only 70 lbs supposed to be similar to a b15 tonally. also has a balanced line out

Re: Q for Reggie(Ginormous)?

I'm only just playing bass and started with a rig that was too big and powerful for me to enjoy, so I sold it (ampeg 4 x 10 and 1 x 15) and got a Phil Jones briefcase. 100watts of great studio quality sound though not really loud enough to gig with. Saying that, it does have a line out.... but man the sound quality is astounding!

Re: Q for Reggie(Ginormous)?

I borrowed my friends SWR LA15 1x15 combo and it was great for when i was in jazz band in highschool, i really idg on the tone of a 1x15 for that kinda stuff.
