Re: Q on Epi Dot Deluxe Pups

Not 100% sure about that one, but I know Epi has thier own version of 57's. I've pulled them out of a few Epi's and they ARE NOT the same as the real Gibsons.

Re: Q on Epi Dot Deluxe Pups

Maybe akin to the "Duncan Designed" pups? If so, it's stunning they'd call them the exact same thing. Duncan changes the names so much you have to research to figure out what a Duncan Designed is supposed to be like.

Re: Q on Epi Dot Deluxe Pups

As Luci said, they are Epi's version of '57s. The pickups that I took out of my Dot were much inferior to the Seth's that I installed.

Re: Q on Epi Dot Deluxe Pups

Thanks, guys. "If it sounds too good to be true ...."

Re: Q on Epi Dot Deluxe Pups

ye i doubt they have gibson 57 pickups, like everyones said epiphone make 57 pickups too so more then likely they'll be the epiphone 57's, but you never know!
im sure my sheraton came with epi 57's

Re: Q on Epi Dot Deluxe Pups

i have had a black Epi dot earlier this year that came with gibson stamped 57 classic's. it may have just been some odd ball chance they were in it. but it was new from the factory.

hmm maybe they are then

Re: Q on Epi Dot Deluxe Pups

I have emailed MF back to ask whether the pups are Gibson '57s or Epi '57s. Customer service at MF may not know the answer.

Don't count on them having an intelligent answer. Like Bluesbend said, Epiphone's do not use Gibson pickups unless it's a special high-end Epiphone, like the Lennon Casino, Les Paul special edition 1959 LP Std, Tony Iommi SG, Nick Valenti Riviera, etc. Standard models won't have Gibson PU's.

Dot's and Dot Deluxes do not have Gibson '57 Classics, they have Epi '57 Classics, which have little in common as far as quality or tone. The stock Epi-made HB's and P-90's use A5's, never A2's, as Asian PU's are muddy to begin with and A2's would make that worse.

I've owned many Epi's over the years and never seen or heard of that. Was the base plate stamped "Gibson?" Did they have the 1950's push-back wire? Did you take off the cover & look at the coils? Was it buried in the usual 5 lbs of Asian wax? I can't believe a run-of-the-mill Dot would have factory-installed Gibsons. Just doesn't happen. If Gibson was doing that, they'd be shouting it from the rooftops. That kind of major upgrade isn't done secretly, not in a market this competitive.

Stevo, you do not have Gibson's in your guitar, guaranteed.

Re: Q on Epi Dot Deluxe Pups

mine were not gibson 57's but they soundede great. But it was going to cost me $60 in hew gold covers because they had never been wiped down after people playing it. So I put a pair of gibson's in it & am really pleased. 57 cassic in neck & classic plus in bridge. I had duncan alinco II's 10 years ago & these are a little more friendly to me it seems. My duncans were open coil-- no covers. I don't think I'll let go of this one though. I have 2 strats with1/2 dozen pickguards built with different pickups. but have really settlrd on texas hots in 1 & suffer 2 in the other. then a gibson with p-90's. What I am saying is if the covers are pretty clean keep them. They are good sounding pickups. I think they are alnico 2 magnets.I was trying to find them to look at them but didn't see of hand. As I remmer they were 490 epiphone knock off's still alnico2 mag & sounded well !!! For a $200 to 300 expense your not gaining a night & day diffeance. but hey if ya got money to burn !!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, but wrong on both counts:
Epiphone doesn't use A2's in any of their Asian-made PU's, their alnicos are all A5's. Like the vast majority of Asian-made PU's, the material quality is questionable, the workmanship is inconsistent, and they're stuffed full of ridiculous amounts of wax, which does nothing for tone quality (good PU's have very little wax in them). They're not made consistently enough to be considered to be a 'knock off' of any PU.

You can get used Gibson, Duncan, Dimarzio, etc online for around half-price. So for under $100, you can get a pair of top quality American-made PU's with much better tone and clarity; there's no reason to waste your time on cheap stock Epi PU's (and I'm known as the 'King of Epi's' on this forum).

You can significantly improve the tones of an import guitar with a pair of used American-made Duncan's, and still keep your investment low. I've done it many times. No need to replace the wiring and hardware. I have a couple Dot Deluxe's myself, and with only the PU's changed, they sound great. I get compliments whenever I play them in public. I doubt anyone in the audience could tell them apart from Gibsons by their tones.

i did not take the covers off or anything. i was going to change them out when i first got the guitar. but when i took the rings off and flipped them over the gibson was stamped on the plate and it had a sticker like on duncans the one on the neck just had 57 and the bridge had 57+ on the sticker. the wire was push back.
the same thing happened to a buddy of mine a few years ago. he bought an epi lp standard. he had the pickups replaced the same day and they tech at the store gave him the new pickups and installed them for the pickups out of the epi and $50 bucks.

Re: Q on Epi Dot Deluxe Pups

if you read the add it says '57 Classic alnico-style pickups "style" being the key word. I also seen this add and was thinking of purchasing one. I think for the price it is still a pretty nice guitar.
looked at add again and underneath article it did say Pickups: 2 '57 Classic Alnico humbuckers so who knows?

Re: Q on Epi Dot Deluxe Pups

I am looking at an Epiphone Classic '57 humbucker right now.

The metal baseplate is stamped (l - r),
R Epiphone H

There are two white self-adhesive stickers. One reads,
57CH(G)
DOT:NECK,BRIDGE
LP:NECK
BHC

The second reads RoHS COMPLIANT.

If this weren't enough, there are also the obvious clues that the elevator screws are metric and the E-to-E polepiece spacing is 53mm on the bridge/treble pickup.

IMO, if the advertised Epiphone featured genuine, US-made Gibson pickups, the word Gibson would have figured prominently in the ad copy.

Re: Q on Epi Dot Deluxe Pups

You certainly don't want those Epi mudbuckers. Everything 'bout them is cheap and nasty. Only if you change the baseplate, screws, slugs and magnets can become barely DECENT.

Been there, done that.

Better get second hand Duncan p'ups and change the harness of the Epi if you really care 'bout tone. The '59 set and the Pearly Gates set sound marvelously in that type of guitar.

HTH,

HTH,

This is a resurrected post from several months ago. I have obtained a PG for the bridge and an A2Pro for the neck but have yet to install them. Thanks for all the advice.
