QPs versus DM Model P

I'm wondering what the differences are between QPs and DM Model P pickups. I'm very familiar with QPs; have had them in my '76 P for a long time. Have never heard Model Ps.

Thanks for any input...

Re: QPs versus DM Model P

I'd like to help but I have only tried one of your named pickups.

The DiMarzio DP146 Will Power Middle pickup is closely related to the Model P. It is loud and in yo' face - kinda like Mr. Sheehan himself. The sound is big. This means that it might overwhelm some band situations.

The QPs, I find, suit some instruments and not others. Depends on how much string winding you want to hear in your bass guitar sound. I can easily understand why somebody with an "import" P or PJ Bass would be impressed after fitting QPs. My own tastes lie elsewhere.

Re: QPs versus DM Model P

Thanks. I find the QPs to be pretty loud and big. I'm mainly after the low end; I have other basses where I can get a J-type growl when I need it. I want more thump.

Re: QPs versus DM Model P

My recipe for P Bass thump is, alder body, rosewood fingerboard, vintage bridge, Antiquity pickup, flatwound strings and play 'em hard.

Re: QPs versus DM Model P

I have one Ant 1 P Bass pickup. I bought it pre-owned but in mint condition. Never been soldered into a circuit.

Unfortunately, by the time Ants hit the UK, the website "street" price has doubled.

Re: QPs versus DM Model P

I always had the impression that these are pretty low output (I realize I may be wrong).

Re: QPs versus DM Model P

I do not know whether SD Ants are low output. I would describe them as the right output. You know the way that an old-fashioned P Bass just occupies the low end in a band mix and kinda pumps nicely without getting in the way of the guitar or vocals. This is what the Antiquity pickup does. So, for that matter, does the most recent crop of Fender AVRI pickups.

OK--thanks--this is useful to consider.

What about the different varieties (57 vs 60s)?

Ant flavors

I'm looking for smooth and bassy.
