Quality gear... who knew?

Re: Quality gear... who knew?

The problem with this debate is that there is no debate. It is just a series of "no, it isn't" responses to every point made. Kinda like the Monty Python argument shop skit.

Put something else in for pricier guitars, and you can have the same non-argument.

Polyester budget shirt vs. upper-end cotton shirt

1. I love my new cotton shirt. I can't believe it feels so much better than my old polyester ones.
- no it doesn't. You just think it does. Define "better feel"

2. Well, it breathes better. You know, lets moisture in and out.
- that's just your preference. Sometimes the purpose of a shirt is to keep moisture in.

3. Well, it feels nicer, it's softer.
- there is no way to quantify that. Some people may prefer the feel of polyester. You are just a natural-fibre snob.

4. But almost every sane human being prefers the feel of cotton, come on, man!
- they only feel that way because they are all mindless dupes of the cotton marketing cabal. There is no quantifiable difference between cotton and polyester.

5. Are you serious? Polyester feels gross!
- there have been remarkable developments in artificial fabrics. You are thinking of old disco suits from the '70s.

6. No I'm not. I'm talking about the five polyester shirts in my closet.
- well, you must have bad ones. The vast majority of polyester shirts are every bit as nice as pricey cotton ones.

7. Ask anyone to touch a polyester shirt and then to touch a cotton one. Overwhelmingly, they will prefer the cotton one.
- there has never been a study scientifically proving cotton shirts feel better than polyester ones.

8. I'm sure scientists have better things to do than to do studies on the blatantly obvious.
- that doesn't refute the fact that no such test proving your side exists. Therefore, you are wrong.

9. How does the absence of a test proving me right prove me wrong?
- Here's a study showing how bees can't tell the difference between hay and garden flowers.

10. (New participant) You know, I wore polyester shirts for years. Thought they were good enough. Finally sprung for some cotton ones. I gotta admit, they are better.
- Your experience is irrelevant, and subjective.

11. Of course it's subjective! I'm wearing the damn thing!
- You only like it better because it looks fancier.

12 It doesn't look fancier. It's a plain white shirt, just like the polyester ones!
- Here's a graph.

NAILED IT.

Re: Quality gear... who knew?

This is a pointless debate anyway, people who are likely to buy imports are going to buy imports, people who are likely to shy away from them will shy away from them.
...

That being said, you better believe that I would rather be playing domestic products and would be if I had the funds to afford them.

It's not that simple. What you say influences what people are likely to buy. A lot of forum members want a "safe space", if you will, where they can proceed to talk up domestic guitars without being asked hard questions about what their actual benefits are. They believe this forum should be that "safe space", and my simple asking of questions and challenging of assumptions would have be banned, if they got their way. Any time I ever research a guitar or amp or pickups, this forum, TDPRI, the gear page, and Strat Talk posts are invariably the top search results. Some people might want an echo chamber where only irrational buying advice is dispensed, but I'm not going to let that happen if I can help it.

Re: Quality gear... who knew?

You may have missed my point... the point was the initial quality of the cheap vehicle was lacking so you change it to suit your needs... and with the high end vehicle that already has all the options you want you don't have to...

Your point used a flawed analogy. There's nothing you can do to make a Pinto into a Mustang.

In the 80/90s there was plenty to do with an LX to change it into a GT though.

I happen to find the stance that cheaper always equals better completely irrational and your almost fanatical defense of it nothing short of pure trolling or maybe some kind of social disorder.

Another missed point. My point was never to change the pinto into the mustang... but to change it to something better than it was... sure it's fine if you go that route but why go through all that when you could just save and buy the mustang outright and have the one you want from the get go? Both don't have to be the exact same model for the analogy to hold water... anyway I apologize for any confusion I may have contributed to with my car analogy. Hope ya'lls day goes better than this thread! ;)

I think he could well be a 'Poe'. He may not even really believe what he is saying, but he is so confident in his ability to philosophically adopt any argument and out think any rebuttals , that he enjoys the game too much to quit. just a possibility.
Personally, even though i know that winning an argument philosophically doesn't mean you are right, the guy is extremely intelligent, and frankly i haven't seen anyone yet able to intellectually shut him down . What i do see is people getting P.O'd cause they can't match wits with him , and thats too bad.

My name is Funkfingers and I am a guitaroholic.

I like expensive guitars. I like inexpensive guitars. I like other stringed instruments that were derived from guitars. (See avatar.) With respect to FMIC, I doubt that a Squier Stick is going to depose the real thing.

Re: Quality gear... who knew?

Who knows why anyone debates anything? I'm not going to lie, my motivations aren't 100% altruistic, maybe I do want to defend my own turf, but is't not as though anyone else here has noble intentions, either. But, if anyone doubts that I believe in import guitars, or am just defending a position for the sake of defending it, here are a few green ones I've bought https://forum.seymourduncan.com/sho...uitar-Thread&p=3789349&viewfull=1#post3789349 the Antiguas are MIM, the green Ash is one of my MIAs, and the other two are MIJ.

He's arguing against a point no one made.

I said I bought a new guitar that's far greater quality than my others, then stated a few reasons why I think it's better.

He said making generalizations about import instruments is wrong and there's no reason anyone should feel the need to buy an American guitar.

Re: Quality gear... who knew?

If no point were being argued, we'd not be at page 10 right now.

The thread is yours to close anyhow. Why don't you get some zingers in and lock it real quick?

It's at 10 pages solely because you're utterly obtuse and arrogant.

The pile of derp just gets higher and higher!

This is getting quite entertaining!!!

You should take your own advice from another thread so these NGD threads never even reach 10 pages:

...everyone's belief that they're entitled to the last word. Be a hero, don't press reply.

I think I'll go outside. Play guitar. Play with my cat. Surround myself with people I enjoy, and people that foolishly enjoy my company as well. Play with fire.
