I figure it likely had something to do with standardizing the look across the P and J versions, as well has letting the pickup height drop lower while having the poles the same distance from the strings.
I am sure it has to do with standardizing the look, but I don't know if it was designed to float above the poles for any kind of sonic reasons. None of the promo pics look like that.
