Quarter Pounders

Hey all,

Just wondering about thoughts on the Quarter Pounders for harshness. Looking at the SSL-4 or SSL-7 for the bridge, Strat. Anyone experienced increased harshness with either of these higher output single coils? Audio on the the net seems to lean towards the 7 sounding slightly warmer with higher gain. Just wondering in general about peoples experience with these pickups. I use hotrails in my other main guitar, but like the idea of a hotter single coil. cheers! Al

Re: Quarter Pounders

So this is not your situation, but it's similar enough that it might be helpful. I used the Tele version a while back, after having a "hot" single, which isn't nearly as hot as the QP, and a hot rail type. I would not describe it as harsh, but it is dramatically different than the single and the hot rail I tried. It's very mid heavy. I thought it was pretty good for high gain settings, and it would probably work well for hot leads. That's not really what I was looking for though, so I took it out.

Welcome to the forum!
I wouldn't describe the Quarter Pound nor the SSL-7 as harsh. They are overwound singles, and when you overwind them, the hotter they get, the less high end they have. So if you are describing harshness as an irritating treble, neither have that.

Re: Quarter Pounders

I wouldn't call the QP "harsh" either. More power, warmer, more mids, slightly less highs. But not harsh.

Re: Quarter Pounders

I would call QPs strong in midrange, with a bit of a rolled back high end, and lots of output. They will compress an amp with a lot less picking force than a typical Strat pickup. They don't sound like P90s, but they lean that way.

Re: Quarter Pounders

So what's the general consensus on choice for bridge with the QPers folks? SSL-4, SSL7, or??? If you don't mind me asking? I do like using a compressor a lot and is why i'm leaning towards the QP and thanx for replys.
