Queens Of The Stone Age / RHCP

Does anybody know what type of effect pedals were used to achieve some of the sounds on Songs For The Deaf (namely "God Is On The Radio), and the new Red Hot Chili Peppers cd (namely the harder rocking ones - the sound of the guitars coming in like waves on 'Dani California' is really sweet... excellent tone). :)

I heard Dani CA yesterday, thart's CA for us natives ;) Anyhow, he sounded a lot like Hendrix to me, a strat a marshall and perhaps a subtle octave divider on the solo. I use to own a C.O.B. octave pedal that could give you that thick solo tone without being an obvious effect, sweet.

Thefade.net has a blurb on the QOTSA gear. You should also search the bands forum, there's a lot of gear talk on there.

God is on the Radio sounds just like plain old distortion to me...

Re: Queens Of The Stone Age / RHCP

There's that sort of very subtle but pretty deep/wide reverb or doubling on the solo parts on "God is in the Radio," maybe that's what he's referring to. If I had to guess, fuzz and reverb would get you close.

This is a pretty newb question, but what does an octave pedal do. actually if anybody can suggest some songs where either a compressor or octave pedal are used distinctly, it would be much appreciated.

Re: Queens Of The Stone Age / RHCP

Listen to Fire - Hendrix for a great example of an octave pedal . . . it just makes the guitar sound lower (almost like a synthy bass). For compression, listen to almost any Phish song . . . it's a little harder to hear, because what a compressor does is even out the notes that are being played, so it's a subtle alteration of the sound. For guitars coming in like waves in Dani California you can get that kind of sound with a Flanger (or you could get similar sounds with a phaser under certain settings)

CKY uses an octaver all the time. Their sound is fantastic.
