Question about my LP Studio Sell or not?

BloodRose

Professional Scapegoat
I have picked 10 of my guitars that are going up for sale. Im considering selling my Gibson LP Studio.
Reasons to sell: It has more resale value then most of my other guitars.
I am keeping my Burny which actually plays better.
It is a Gibson and should be easy to turn over.
Quite honestly, Im sick of Gibson hiking prices and not sure I want to support them.

What should I ask for a mint 2006 Studio?

Reasons not to sell:
It is a great guitar.
With Gibson continually hiking prices, Ill never own another gibson.

Any thoughts??

Re: Question about my LP Studio Sell or not?

You've already supported them, so that point is moot.

What's more important is this: Can the Gibson be set up to play the same as the Burny?

If so, off-load that and keep that Gibby.

Re: Question about my LP Studio Sell or not?

Just look at ebay, they have prices for their mint les paul studio, and just adjust your price accordingly,

Is the gibson les paul studio or any gibson les paul , worth its price,

If your going to put a price/performance value of your gibson les paul, what you the price be ?????, I played these, but I dont own one,

For me a New Gibson Les paul studio should only be = $ 950

LP Traditional = $ 1600

LP Standard = $ 1600

LP Supreme = $ 1700

If your going to put a Price/Performance Value for a new LP. what would it be, I know all LP models vary in quality and tone even with the same model,

Just put your Price/Performance Value

Bloodrose sorry if I put up a question :) want the opinions of all Gibson LP owners and users

Its hard to post a thread, all of my threads dont reach the server,

Re: Question about my LP Studio Sell or not?

About your question Blood rose, I think just sell it and buy a LP Standard or Classic at Ebay, It will hold its value more than the Studio,

buy a LP Standard or Classic but the older model, not the new one, Standard 2008 models are chambered, Trads are just weight relieved,
I dont like Chambered les Paul, not enough meat

Thats just my opinion

Sorry if I post a question :) , none of my threads ever reach the server,

Re: Question about my LP Studio Sell or not?

Let me ask you this instead.
Of all the LPs you have, if you were to close your eyes (i.e. "hide" from your mind's eye the name on that headstock) after GOOD identical setups and identical fresh strings which:
Plays the best
Sounds the best
FEELS the best?
If it's the Burny (and AFAICT it is and its' only downside is its' big weight) then I'd say you don't need this LP or any Gibson.
I don't own anything Gibson related (although I'd certainly like a pre-MusicYo Kramer) and don't feel as if I'm missing out on sth.

When all else fails decide like this, if you had to only keep one guitar (of each kind) with no chance of getting another one which one you'd keep?
But I have a feeling you already know the answer to this.
Personally the only thing I'd ask myself is "what are the chances of climbing even more in value"? i.e. I'd try to figure out the best TIME to sell.

BTW, what are the other guitars you're planning to sell?

Re: Question about my LP Studio Sell or not?

I think the first thing Im gonna have to do is something I really dread. I need to gut both my burny and the gibbie and swap pups. The Burny is a beast and plays great but I dont know how it'll sound with passive pickups. I dont want my only lp to have actives.

I been under a ton of stress, very broke and getting mad at myself for aquiring more gear than I can afford and more than my skill level warrants.
Ive been trying to talk myself into unloading all but one or two.
Anyhow, without giving much thought, I just hit pen to paper and made 2 columns and just started writing.
Then I looked at it and thought, yeah can prob live with that. I hate to sell any tho cuz I LOVE having the variety..
in the sell column:
LTD
Schecter C1
SG
RG
Charvel 4
PV nitro
MG100 maybe
EPI LP
Gibson LP maybe
Kramer Focus 6000

Re: Question about my LP Studio Sell or not?

I think you may have answered your own question in a roundabout way...

If the only reason you think about keeping the Gibson is because "it's a Gibson" and you feel you should, because its a Gibson... but there's really no bond with the guitar, then why keep it around?

Yes... variety is great... but how many of 'em do you REALLY play, and ENJOY playing?

Karmically speaking... What would bring you more joy? Having 2 or 3 guitars that you truly love, or having a bunch of physical possessions that bog you down mentally? The things you own end up owning you...

And besides... think about having to walk around for the rest of eternity carrying all those guitars & changing strings...

:scratchch

If I wasn't a full-time player I'd probably own 3 or 4 guitars, if even that many. Right now... having been dealt that car wreck a few weeks ago I'm pondering things myself. Yeah... 15 guitars are great, but so is having transportation!

Re: Question about my LP Studio Sell or not?

Hey Jmoose! Yeah, its becoming like an anchor. I figure even moving all those, Ill still be on cloud 9. But the gibby is the issue.. I like the guitar. it plays good and all.. it just isnt the magic that I have with my explorer and some of the others. I definately want to keep a lester in the arsenal for those tones, but I have to figure which one to keep.

By the way, sorry to hear of your misfortune! Hope all works out for you! Ill pm you when I get my pm cleaned out. (later today)

Look man, collecting guitars should be about the fun of it (PLAYING them should be about enjoyment and the soul).
The moment you feel it's started to actually become a burden then IMO you know it's time to bring the two (the fun of collecting and the joy of playing) closer together.

In my view you've owned enough guitars to be able to tell which are average, which are good/great and which have that spark of magic that make you wanna pick 'em up and rock hard.
Apart from monetary value, apart from brands, apart from anything other than the bond you feel, or not, you'll know which ones you keep as part of your collection and which because you wanna PLAY them.

As for having one LP for the tones, that's no biggy, there should be at least one LP that fits the bill and if there isn't, then you've probably haven't found the right one yet so until you do, just keep the one that will keep you the happiest while not being a monetary liability.

Think hard if there's a guitar that's not on the above list and should be or if there are GOOD chances of having one (two TOPS) on that list that you'd probably SERIOUSLY regret and then go from there.

BTW, when that time comes shoot me a mail, I might be able to help.

Moose, I'm sorry to hear of that, I'm trying to buy my first car as well and for that have sacrificed TOO much (even buying a cup of coffee is a luxury for me these days...)

Thanks, though... things aren't THAT tight for me.

For the last few, and next few weeks really I've been laid up and can't do much of anything besides watch TV, putz on the internet and play guitar. Starting to wonder about things like why I own three Strats even though I don't even like Strats...

I went to a Nissan dealer on Friday 'cause I got this thing saying I was pre-approved for a $25k loan, not that I'm about to buy a car... hell, grabbing a 2-liter of soda is enough of an effort right now, to say nothing of driving. But really... with the economy being what it is and all that...

I'll probably keep everything unless I need to scare up cash for a down payment. Thankfully, with work and all... I'm in a position where I don't need to go buy a car next week. I can take a couple months to let it sort out if needed...

Re: Question about my LP Studio Sell or not?

sell it. get another one if you regret it. They are pretty common. They go for a modest price, so youll probably have decent luck getting a fair price realtive to its actual new price for it, cause people still have money to spend on small ticket items that are in demand for reasonably less than what they sell for new... like the Studio Paul.. Its the expensive guitars that are moveing slow now.

You don't really like it, you don't play it, you sell it.

Granted, the prices are low, but whatever you want to buy for the money is also down.

Re: Question about my LP Studio Sell or not?

I dunno man, I say if you sell both the epi and the gibson you owe yourself one les paul in return. Another burny or tokai or something so you still come out ahead and don't feel like you're just sacrificing all this stuff

in fact that might be a good solution; sell it, but buy something you like with the money as long as it's at least X amount less than what you get for the studio

Although I love your plan, the something in return at this point is the joy of not getting myself and kids thrown out of my house..
Im having house payment issues due to my part time job being slow.

But just for the record, Id still have my Burny
