Question about recording vocal track

I hear this vocal/mic/eq technique in this video.
How do I achieve it?
It's right in your face popping out, what's the trick?

Re: Question about recording vocal track

It's close mic'd and heavily compressed; that's also the sound of an SM7 in general...
Liliac is a great band, their album is quite good.

Re: Question about recording vocal track

Compressed with software? Or like a tc helicon
pedal or similar?

Re: Question about recording vocal track

Impossible to tell but I would guess it's a combination of both a hardware comp when the vocal was tracked as well as a plugin compression added after. It sounds like an optical compressor to my ears.

That. Multiple stages, adding up.

Recording in a reflection-free room + a great mic into a superb low-noise preamp into an LA2A family compressor during tracking to start with. Slamming the crap heavily out of it during post production with some outboard compressor or a VST or both. Slamming the crap again out of the whole on the masterbus, most probably using a sidechain compressor to gently pump the instrumental background back whenever the vocals are on.

On the question, there is no magic trick. It is a result of a series of right production decisions. If you have no experience you can achieve this by fiddling with such equipment in the practice and making many mistakes then learning how to fix them, after a while to avoid them. It is approx. a 5-6 years learning curve.

There's also saturation going on here, bringing out the raspiness in the voice even more. Heavy compression and saturation doing alot here. Classic way for in your face vocals is to hit it with a faster compressor first to grab the peaks (1176 stylz) then hit it with a slower one to bring it all forward (LA2A stylz)
