question about Red Devil vs single slot Custom Shop Pearly Gates

I can see the details for the Red Devils in the SD specifications, but custom shop doesn't give anything on theirs. The details for the full size PG are available, can anyone confirm that the two are close? Of course, if the two kinds of PG are about the same, I must admit that I'm confused by the radical tone profile differences between the RD and PG... they are supposed to be based on the SAME '59 PAFs on Mr. Gibbons' Pearly Gates. Am I trusting too much in the tone profiles and output descriptions on the main Seymour Duncan site?

Maybe a better question now that the Red Devil pups have been out for a while is: has anyone here actually compared them to either sets of Pearly Gates? Unfortunately, I can't afford to just order both for in guitar comparison...

If it matters, I'm going to be pairing whichever with custom shop Ant. Surfer sound-like single coils in standard humbucker routs.

Thoughts?

the cs lil pg doesnt sound all that much like the full size pg, production or cs. the full size is a bigger sounding pup in either case. the cs lil pg is great for what it is though, more meaty in the low mids to my ear than the production pg and a little more narrow sounding. i havent tried a red devil but im getting a set soon, i assume they will be different than any of the pgs

Yep, I don't think any of the single sized 'buckers can ever sound the same. The narrower string window makes for a change that cannot be compensated for.

The clips sound good - they seem to have the rasp that the PG gets......but I'd guess if you had the 2 guitars side by side, there'd be a bump in lows and mids needed to go from one to the other without a drastic tone shift.

Thank you both for your time answering.

I guess I worded my question poorly, I was wondering how the red devils compared to the mini pg since they are both supposed to be trying to get the sound of the same pickups (the '59 PAFs in Mr. Gibbons' "Pearly Gates" guitar) into the single slot package. I understand they are not going to sound exactly like the full pup. I don't understand why they would have two different pickups that are supposed to have the same sound. For that matter, presuming they don't sound identical, which sounds more like the original?

Other than the folks at SD, I don't know of anyone who has both types of pickups yet. The Red Devils have only been out a little while, and I am sure more comparisons will be coming out soon. My initial thought is that the Red Devil is probably fatter, with more mids (and hotter) than a PG for Strat.

id guess the cs lil pg is probably closer to the production pg but dont have a cs lil pg to try. hoping to try the red devils soon! got a new (to me) guitar and pickguard on the way. i have a pg loaded guitar but its pretty different than whats coming so it wont be a good a/b test but itll be fun to compare anyway

just a quick update went with the red devils paired with a custom shop single coil based on the Ant. Surfer (it went into the neck) and an SSL-5 in the bridge.

thoughts about your sound? how did you hear it? Does it have more gain than traditional single coils or approximately the same output?
years ago I had tried the same thing with a Jb Jr and a Hot Stack Set but it sounded not much different in volume

I'm almost ashamed to say I have them both, (CS Lil PG. and the RD set), and haven't gotten around to installing either yet. I really need to bump this to the top of my "to-do" list.

That is very cool, but are you concerned with the magnetic interaction of the pups so close to each other?
