Question about Single Conductor (coaxial) wire

I just got my SM-1n, and it comes with the vintage-style center=hot braid=ground wire. I have never experienced this type of wire before, and I just wanted to know what the accepted technique for hooking it up is. Do I solder a spare piece of wire to the braid and ground that, or do I separate the braid from the rest of the wire and solder it directly to ground?

I usually pull the center wire out a bit from the braided cable and solder it to the switch or pot. Then I solder the braided part to ground...usually the back of a pot. Sometimes I have to trim away a little of the braided part to expose enough of the center/hot wire. It helps to presolder the braid...just heat it up and get some solder flowing in it before trying to solder it to the back of a pot or ground. Lew

Thanks Lew - I am a pretty thorough solderer actually, and I usually pre-solder everything anyway.

I'll be connecting the hot lead to the 3-way switch, and the braid to the back of the volume pot most likely. Should I seperate the braiding from the rest of the wire to connect the end of it to the pot, or should I just solder the whole outside of the wire down onto the pot to ground it before it gets to the switch? I hope that makes sense.

Gibson is the one that used that cable on thier guitars and they would not separate the braid. They'd just presolder or tin it and then press it against the back of the pot and solder it on. It's kind of a pain to work with at first but it's not really that bad after you've worked with it a while. Good luck! Lew
