When playing with high gain the tone knob is pretty useless, as it only makes the sound lifeless when turned down too much but has no hearable effect until then.
The volume knob is used to get clean sounds in combination with turning a distortion pedal off, if that. But most metallers of that age didn't even do that, the volume poti was purely an on/off switch so that you don't get feedback when you put the guitar down.
