question about stack plus

I'm curious about the Stack Plus pickups. They're supposed to sound the same (or very close) as their non-stack counterparts, but they have a much lower resonant peak.

SSL-1 Resonant Peak 10KHz
STK-S4 Resonant Peak 5.7KHz (neck/middle) /5.2KHz (bridge)

SSL-5 Resonant Peak 6KHz
STK-S6 Resonant Peak 4.85KHz

So how can they sound the same?

The SSL-1 definitely has a much lower resonance peak than 10K.

There is no good way to really measure the resonance peak. Too much going on a a pickup in a guitar swung under bud light with a cable going through capacitance into an input impedance.

you can really only compare numbers between similar pups, the design of the stacks vs that of the ssl1 is obviously different.

the cs+ really does sound pretty much like a ssl1, 90% there anyway

That must be some measuring screwup on their part.

A resonance peak around 10KHz would make pretty much a pickup that you put under the strings of an acoustic. No life of it's own. More like a microphone.

I'm out of the office for a couple weeks, but when I get back I'll check it out. What could be happening is that we're testing the resonant peak of the sum of the two coils, BUT, since the top coil is sensing the audio and the bottom coil is only sensing inverted hum, the way the pickup sounds is more based on the resonant peak of the top coil, which would, by itself, have a resonant peak closer to the single coil counterpart.

Incidentally a single coil with a resonant peak of 10k is not unusual, and not indicative of an acoustic guitar pickup. And by definition, that means the resonance is ascending toward the peak on either side. So perhaps a better way to think of a 10k resonant peak in a guitar pickup is a "big hump" between 5k and 12k. The higher peaks tend to fall off very quickly.

My main question as a guy interested in both sets, is what would a player expect if he had two identical strats....one with stack plus, and one with YJM Fury set? Which one would a strat afficionado who wants great tone go with?

At a guess, either, depending on which great tone they want.

Which is likely true but useless. I'd love some details about how the YJM compares to other pickups...

Evan has posted a clip where Yngwie talked about the development of the YJMF and said that he wanted something a little different than the CS+, as the CS+ sound/feel too much like vintage Strat pickups.
