Question about staggered pu's

Hey guys I have a short question about pu's like the SSL-1, Antiquity Surf etc.

Would you recommend using string sets with a wound G-string or does it also sound good with an unwound g-string?

Re: Question about staggered pu's

It's a matter of personal preference. Lots and lots of classic tracks have been recorded with a plain G over a vintage staggered pickup. If you can, the best thing to do is try both.

Staggered magnet pickups like that were designed with a wound G in mind however I can only think of a few Strat players that really use a wound G but...I can name a boat load that use vintage or vintage style staggered magnets and a plain G...

Re: Question about staggered pu's

If you've never heard your Tele or Strat with a medium gauge string set with a wound G, you're in for a real treat if you like to play chords. Not the right set for string benders tho. I keep my Tele with the staggered magnet Fralin Strat neck pickup & Duncan Jerry Donahue onstage with me for slide and also for playing "acoustic" tunes like Clapton's "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out". It's strung with a medium set of strings and sounds much bigger and deeper than it did with lights with an unwound G. It also plays more tune tune.

The heavier Dean Markley Nickel Steel strings (which I think sound excellent) come with both a wound and a plain G string.

Whether it sounds "good"? No way to answer. The incorrect stagger with a plain G string throwing the original design off has now entered people's expectations as "the" strat sound.

It only costs $4 to try.
