Question about tubes and headroom

Places like eurotubes usually offer max headroom tube replacements for various amps. Does that mean the volume doesnt change and the breakup happens later? Or it means something else.

Some tubes break up sooner than others...with todays testing and matching you can have sets set up from jump to be cleaner or dirtier than other sets.

It's not so much a volume thing as it is a headroom only issue.

i just dont want to change the tubes and loose volume. If i did anything it would be to get louder cleans and still take pedals nicely.

High headroom tubes will help. If you want to keep it loud and clean then a high efficiency speaker will go a long way too.

I guess what i mean to ask is that, if i change out tubes for a high headroom set, will the volume (decibels) be the same or less at "6" on the volume knob? Or this is all variable?

What you will notice with a higher headroom tube is more dynamics before compression sets in - they will sound louder because they are not compressing as much.

What type tubes are you looking for - 6V6, EL84, etc?

i agree that jj have the highest headroom and i use them in my deluxe reverb and they sound great. they arent as classic sounding a 6v6 that some others are but the jj is a great tube.

JJs are the best sounding high headroom 6V6s I've come across.

I've been using JJ's since they've been known....I think. They're cheap, last a long time, and sound great. I don't know what else you could want.

And here's some truth......Myles Rose....GT tube guru and associated with 65 Amps.....he's forgotten more than most people know about tubes. He says the JJ EL-84 is the one to buy, for current production tubes.

And I don't need anyone to tell me about their E-34L's. They're cheap and happen to sound great.

I'm not discounting any other tube brands that are excellent, but for power tubes JJ are the best overall value.

I put JJ 6V6 in my DRRI and I agree with what's been said. They don't sound as "classic" but they sound good, they have a little more headroom, and they are cheap. They seem to be built solid and can handle being biased hotter. JJ wins with power tubes.

myles is a wealth of knowledge for sure. the jj el84 is the only one that id recommend. when it comes to 6v6's there are some other good options too. haven't tried any of their big bottles
