Question about Vintage Marshall Cabs

Alright I have a question about marshall amp cabs.

How much do you figure a 1966 Marshall Straight Cab is worth? This pretty prominent session guitarist is selling me his for $400 if I can scrounge the money together. It is obviously worth alot more than this but he is trying to help me out. I don't have a new vintage guitar guide I only have old ones so I was wondering if someone could look it up for me. Thanks...

EDIT: I have absolutely no plans on selling it I was just curious how good a deal I'm getting. I really hope I can get the cash together because man it is cool.

$400 is a great deal for an old marshall cab if it has its original speakers and they arent blown

Re: Question about Vintage Marshall Cabs

^^ or when you think about it for just about any Marshall cab that works fine and hasn´t been to hell and back ;)

Re: Question about Vintage Marshall Cabs

yeah original speakers and good condition. He was a studio musician - didn't play too many shows.

I'm just curious how much they normally sell for...

Re: Question about Vintage Marshall Cabs

if its a '66, is it basket weave? ive seen old basket weave cabs sell for 2k+ in good shape

Re: Question about Vintage Marshall Cabs

Either way, it´s definitely worth more that 400 bucks... grabbing it to flip it for a profit however would be really bad karma IMO, If I were in his situation (more or less giving somebody likely valuable a 4x12 cheap) and I saw that thing on eBay, CL or whatever a week later, I´d be on a freakin warpath.... ;)

Not saying that´s your plan, but then again if it isn´t it doesn´t really matter how much the cab is worth :beerchug:

Re: Question about Vintage Marshall Cabs

i'm sorry it is a 1967. Vintage guitar priceguide (2006 edition- i'm a bit behind) has it at like $2,000 to $3,000 but I have a feeling it has gone down since then because of the economy and stuff like that. I just hope I can get the money together because it will likely sound sick with my egnator rebel head.

I know I'm really serious about holding onto it but just for sh*ts and giggles I wanted to see how much it was worth.

I'm not like that man. I'm just hoping I can get such an awesome cab to play through. It really would be so cool.

Re: Question about Vintage Marshall Cabs

^^ No prob bro, I hope you can get your hands on it too :beerchug:

Re: Question about Vintage Marshall Cabs

I should have all sorts of info on this at home. I'll post later on when I get off work.

You say it's all original? I have an '08 price guide, but I didn't buy the '09. However, I have thumbed through one, and the economy didn't seem to affect the things I looked at. I think we'll be pretty safe taking the '08 price and adding roughly $100-200.

I can also give you the lowdown on the cab itself if some of our other brothers don't beat me to it.

Regardless, $400 is the deal of the century if the cab isn't faulty for some reason. Even then, it's probably a relatively easy fix.

I would appreciate any info you have. They are 75 watt cabs if it is from 67 right? I'm not sure where I heard that... I have stuck with a fender deville the 9 years I've been playing but I really like the egnator and I hope to get this and it should sound killer!

Re: Question about Vintage Marshall Cabs

Is it a '77 or '67?

I'm having trouble right now remembering the time frame on cab wattage, because they changed speakers quite often. It's a good possibility the cab is 100 watts with 25w Celestions (which would match my cab :14:), but I can't swear to it without my references in front of me.

What would really be cool is if we had the codes off of the speakers themselves, or even just the label info from each one.

I'll find out what I can, and hook you up.

Yeah I meant 67 but it is blistering hot in my house and I'm having trouble concentrating haha.

Re: Question about Vintage Marshall Cabs

those should be either 20w or 25w greenbacks. the 60w cabs had the 20w speakers and ive seen at least one 75w cab with the back off that still had 20w speakers so not sure where the wattage ratings come from. either way they are great speakers and its a sweet cab

Re: Question about Vintage Marshall Cabs

Hey, it might be a '67 AND a '77. It won't be hard to tell. :)

If he has one of each you guys can fight it out over the 77 haha. Seriously though if he has anything else I'll let him know that people on here are players who would love the opportunity to get such old gear for such an amazing price.

Re: Question about Vintage Marshall Cabs

Here's the scoop, as near as I can tell, using info from the year 1967, including a 1967 Marshall catalog, and assuming all is still original.

The cab is either one of the first 1960B cabs, which would have been 75w and most likely fitted with 20w Celestions, or it's a model 1982B and would have been 100w. The 1982s were supposed to be a "high power" version of the 1960. They could have been greenbacks, blackbacks, creambacks, or greybacks - but I'm not sure which years Celestion used which color magnet covers. They could also be Celestion G12H30s.

Depending on color and condition, the cab is worth $3000-5500, according to the '08 book. Could be a little more now, but I can almost guarantee you it won't devalue unless something is changed or broken.

Not to be a wet blanket, but I'd be very surprised if the speakers haven't been changed along the way, or reconed at the very least. Obviously, that will change things, but, still should be a nice cab and worth every bit of $400. The mojo it will have will be worth that.

Edit: the first 1960 cabs were 60w, but went to 75w after a couple of years, around '66 or '67.

Re: Question about Vintage Marshall Cabs

Is it a Marshall cab built in 1966 or a model 1966 cab?!?

Very LARGE difference there!

The 1966 cabs are a diagonal 2x12 that's a bit smaller then a 4x12.

Personally I can't see anyone but a methhead giving up an original basketweave cab at $400... not when its an easy $3000... unless its trashed and has non-original speakers.

This is a model 1966;

Thanks for the excellent info. I haven't gotten back to the guy but I am pretty sure the speakers are the same not sure about reconed but even if it was I'm sure it is still really great.

Re: Question about Vintage Marshall Cabs

You're welcome...

I think Moose made an important point, and you may have clarified already.

Make sure the dude isn't talking about a different cab altogether, that it's really a cab from the year 1967 and it's a 4 x 12. If not, what I posted is worthless. I'd love to see some inside and out pics of this thing. Keep us posted.

If it's legit, the guy must think a hell of a lot of you. That'll be the score of all scores. You need to find a way to fund that bad boy. :)
