question about Weber 12" California, and fender tweed cab

Hey, I've been offered a 1x12 fender tweed cab with a 80 watt Weber 12" California ceramic speaker, with some extra dome thingie for extra warmth or something. I know it's a very neutral speaker, so it made me wonder if it'll be good with my Marshall and Laney?? And how are Fender tweed cabs?

Re: question about Weber 12" California, and fender tweed cab

The Weber California is a clone of a 60's JBL "D" series speaker and I have never tried the Weber version but I did have a pair of JBL 12's for a while and they are anything but neutral sounding...JBL's have a voice all of their own...not sure it would work well with a Marshall style amp, most guys that use the old JBL's put them in BF era Fender amps or something like that...

Re: question about Weber 12" California, and fender tweed cab

Hmm, well, I'll let some more people chime in about them, because it's confusing to me.. Even the site says they're neutral.

Re: question about Weber 12" California, and fender tweed cab

Or should I say, they call it 'uncolored'. I think the speaker you are thinking of is the alnico version, because under the alnico version they talk about those JBL speakers, and under this ceramic they don't.

EDIT: DOH!!!! I'm blind, actually they do write about that JBL speaker under the ceramic also.

Well it sounds like I should let this go then, and look for something else.

Re: question about Weber 12" California, and fender tweed cab

I have a Weber Cali 10" Ceramic in my Princeton. I'd say Uncolored is a pretty good way to discribe it. It doesen't accent any frequncies to my ears. If anything it's very punchy. I tryed it with my laney and it sounded good, But not the classic English Crunch of my V-30. I didn't try it. But I bet the cali and V-30 would sound great together. The Cali series is modeled after the JBL's. But I think the original JBL-DF120's where Alnico's.

Hmm, well, maybe I should look elsewhere then.

Re: question about Weber 12" California, and fender tweed cab

did you always wonder how hendrix got such wonderful cleans out of a marshall? Answer-load it with aluminum domed JBL D120's!!

JBL's and the like are great speakers, and they could even help a british amp get a slick chimey tone. As mentioned, their frequency response is pretty even, but at the same time, they add their own definition and color to the tone.

Re: question about Weber 12" California, and fender tweed cab

Quencho...Im not gonna say that you are wrong but I would like to know where you heard that...Jimi used Marshalls, Sunn's, Sound City's, and Fender Dual Showmans...I have seen a few pics of him with a Marshall head on a Dual Showman cab as well as a Sound City cab but I have never heard that.

Also, a 100 watt Plexi Marshall is MUCH cleaner than you think and has a much glassier/chimey tone that you are leading on...

Re: question about Weber 12" California, and fender tweed cab

Christian, My Buddy has a Sunn 2x15 cab w/t JBL d-130's in it. He claims it once belonged to leslie west? If ledgend/folklaw are true? Jimi gave Leslie the Sunn's? So that would tie Jimi to JBL's (In a roundabout way) But you are correct. A 100watt plexi will clean up nice with the volume knob down. I haven't seen the cab in a while but i think it has the word` Mountain'
faintly stenceled on the bottom. It could have been Felix Parpaladlards<SP> or just some screwball who wrote Mountain on it? But it makes for a good story.:D

Re: question about Weber 12" California, and fender tweed cab

A 1959 Marshall is clean...chimey, got that very special precense to it.
Aludomes makes the sound hard and terrible...well never heard anything else with the ones I have tried.
Use a 1959 with a 4x12 with 30 watts greenbacks(G12H) and you will get that clean sound.

Stop keeping my thread alive :laugh2:

Re: question about Weber 12" California, and fender tweed cab

Ken,

Jimi did give several Sunn amps and cabs to the boys in Mountian and Im pretty sure they did have JBL's in them (I have a article from an older VG mag that is about THESE amps...I'll look around for it tonight after work) and like I said I have seen the Dual Showman cabs with JBL's I was just saying I had never seen a Marshall cab with JBL's in or or heard about it. Quencho's post made it sound like you need different speakers to get a clan tone from a Marshall and I just wanted I to be know that if you're dealing with a Plexi that is not ture...plexi's are actually very clean sounding amps...you know that and I know that but there are some younger guys on the forum that might not have known that.

So...on to the real cool stuff...Have you ever played throught the Hendrix/Mountian cab?! I'll look around tonight for that article...maybe your buddy's cab is mentioned in it!

very true if you're dealing with a plexi, at 100+ watts anything is clean. Unless this diagram is BS, hendrix did load his 4x12's with d130f's

Re: question about Weber 12" California, and fender tweed cab

I would not belive that unless I saw actual pics with my own eyes...sorry bro, not trying to be a jerk but Jimi wasn't one to mod amps or even replace broken parts...

Re: question about Weber 12" California, and fender tweed cab

i guess the website didn't have pics for sound city or sunn cabs that did come loaded with JBL's so they just put marshall cabs and said it was loaded with JBLs.

But it does link to hendrix's tone being, at one point, Marshall>JBL speakers, and don't tell me that his tone sucked all the time (Late in his career, like the live in Berklee 1970 DVD, he sounded out of tune and played poorly in a few songs)

Re: question about Weber 12" California, and fender tweed cab

-Sound City cabs NEVER camn stock with JBL speakers...Sunn cabs could be ordered with them

-I never said Jimis tone sucked...
