Question about wiring.. Dim single

I had only a few minutes last night to wire in a new pup. Background: Guitar is a Ibanez RG570 with Duncan 59b in the neck, C5 bridge. Mid pup was a super sounding Bill Lawrence L250Hp. The thing sounded fantastic. On its own and in combo with the others in position 2 and 4. The problem was that I couldnt keep it working. There is a short and it would cut in and out..
SO.. Last night I popped in a Dim Virtual Vintage Blues pup.. Had to work super quick.. Got restrung, tuned and tested. Ok, sounds great on its own, (alil too dirty maybe) sounds good in position 4 with the neck, but in position 2 its really bright!!
Is this normal?? I went red wire to switch and green and bare to back of pot. Did I miss wire??
Im thinking maybe its normal and I just have to roll off the tone..??
Id appreciate some help!! Thanks!

Re: Question about wiring.. Dim single

Let me guess: you never combine your two humbuckers....right?

If you did, my guess is you'd find one is out of phase with the other.

I would guess that you need to remove the magnet from the bridge humbucker and spin it around 180 degrees and re-install it to put the bridge pickup in phase with the middle pickup.

Re: Question about wiring.. Dim single

Lew, Thanks for the suggestion. Why didnt I have a problem with the other single? Played the guitar to day and in postion 2 its real bright, and thin.. Seems to me that the bridge pup is down on power too in setting 1

Re: Question about wiring.. Dim single

Possibly because the other single was reverse wound and possibly reverse polarity compared to your new single? I dunno....I could be barking up the wrong tree with this analysis. I could tell what's up in a heartbeat if I could check your guitar. Do you still have the old pickup? If so, press the polepieces of your old pickup against the polepieces of your new pickup and see if they attract or repel. If they attract your old pickup is reverse polarity compared to your new one. Lew

that sound of thin and bright is definately out of phase......as to why or how you could fix that, ill let somebody else figure it out lol

Re: Question about wiring.. Dim single

There's two ways to fix the out of phase thing. If the old single coil was in phase with the neck pickup and bridge pickup, just reverse the two wires on the middle pickup. Unsolder it and reverse the connections. However if the new middle single coil is in phase with one humbucker and out of phase with the other, then than the humbucker that it is out of phase with needs its phase reversed. IMO, the best way to do that is to loosen the screws on the bottem of the pickup and slide the magnet out and roll it over...like rolling over in bed from your back to you stomach. Lew

Re: Question about wiring.. Dim single

OH!! Roll it over? I was thinking just rotate around like a clock hand. You saved me from having to do it twice! Thanks!

Re: Question about wiring.. Dim single

Took Lew's advice and rolled over the magnet.. Success!! Awesome! Thanks Lew!!
