Question Concerning SH-1 '59 & Pots

Hello, i was interested in buying a set of pickups. I saw the set of SH-1 '59 humbuckers really cheap on the Internet ($80), and I thought about getting them.

I have an import Dean Z (1 of 4 custom made '79 series in green). I was planning eventually to get Dimarzio Super Distortions, as they were in the original 1979 Dean Z's, but this seems like a really good offer.

The pickups are described as vintage sounding. I was wondering if switching out my guitar's standard 500K pots to CTS 300K pots would add more bite to the pickups.

Thanks,

Mr. M

Re: Question Concerning SH-1 '59 & Pots

switching to cts brand might not be a bad idea but going from 500k to 300k will cause a loss in high end, not a boost. higher the value the less loss of treble.
part of the problem with cheap pots is that they are usually lower in value than they are supposed to be, a cheap 500k pot might only read 352k which is a noticable difference from 500k.

the 59's are pretty versitle pups but not high output. if you have a high gain amp you might really really like them even if you play hard rock or metal

Well, my amp really isnt high gain. but upgraded pots would help.

how does the sound of the '59s compare to a Dimarzio SD.

what's the amp? and let's talk about distortion pedals...

Re: Question Concerning SH-1 '59 & Pots

I just put a '59 (single conductor) in the bridge position on my 84 Tokai Love Rock and I really like it. I plan on putting another in the neck and 2 more in my other Love Rock. They are great distorted and clean. A set for $80 is a great deal. They are probally the single conductor version so keep in mind that you wont be able to coil split them etc.

Re: Question Concerning SH-1 '59 & Pots

the 59 is almost nothing like the dimarzio sd.

the 59 is a lower output alnico 5 paf type pup meaning it has a nice clear top end, slightly pulled back mids and a decent bottom
where the sd is a high output ceramic rock pup with a thick sound and lots of mids and bottom.
