Question For Bachtorock..Hybrid C5 And Stock 59?

What do you hear as differences tonally between the 59/C A5 Hybrid and a stock 59 in the bridge?

I started wanting more highs from the A2 Hybrid and so I changed the magnet over to A5 instead last night(finally)..Do you prefer the stock 59 over an A5 Hybrid? Curious? Thanks.

BACHTOROCK told me that any magnet will work well in his hybrid
did you consider a ceramic magnet?
as far i can recall some really love the the hybrid with the ceramic(SH-5)
I have a stock custom on its way to me from a returned duncan distortion
i may try the hybrid since i have a 59n ?

Re: Question For Bachtorock..Hybrid C5 And Stock 59?

I have an A5 and A2 Hybrid. The A5 version has just a touch more mid and slightly smoother top compared to a 59b. A wee bit hotter as well. I thing the tone varies slightly depending on where the hotter coil is also.

is this true? I have been considering giving the hybrid a go if the stock custom does not appeal to me.
i really love the JB but do want to try others duncans :)
can the hybrid get down?

Thanks for posting...I use 2 Hybrids also and I always use the Custom slug coil bobbin, but in this Les Paul I'm not splitting coils...I have to try out the A5 Hybrid tonight with my band.So far I hear more output, and tighter and stronger lows and more highs..Not sure about the mids though?

One of my strats has another Hybrid (Custom slug bobbin w/PG Screw bobbin and the A2 magnet that I really like alot in the bridge position..This pickup is also wired for series/split/parallel tones with a mini switch..

I don't like ceramic magnets in any of my pickups and I've only tryed A2 and A5 magnets, but I also have A3 and A4 magnets I could try? I feel I might be happy with just a stock 59B which oddly enough,I haven't actually tryed yet. :smack:

do the magnets really effect tone tone that much?
I am a little confused? what is a alnico 3 and 4?
didnt gibson just use 2's and 5's?

Alnico magnets are a combination of metals(Aluminum,Nickel,Cobalt)...The "CO" part is the amount of cobalt...A5 has more cobalt in it then A2 does.I'm guessing the more cobalt, the brighter and tighter the pickup if you were to use different alnico magnets with the same pickup?..I hear the A5 as tightening up the lows and the feel overall and the highs and output are stronger compared to A2....A3 and A4 are just two more versions or variables of the more common A2 and A5 magnets..Yes,the magnets alone do make a difference and alot of us have tryed alot of variations...I've not tryed an A4 magnet yet,but I have tryed A2,3,and 5...A3 is pretty close to A2 in my findings, but A5 is the strongest and tightest sounding of the 3 mentioned..

STRATDELUXER97, you have a good ear. The 59 with A4 adds mids: https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=34025

People say I have "great ears"...though I think I'm losing some of my great ears from screaming through Marshalls for alot of years...I've tamed things down to 2x12 cabinets these days though..

I haven't tryed the A4 magnet that Lew sold me,but I have tryed the A2,A3,and A5 magnets..The A5 dominates with it's strong output, tight lows, and crisp highs and mids..I just received an 8.5K 59B that might work out great for me also if this A5 Hybrid is missing anything?

Sorry for getting in late here, but The Architect and others seem to have answered the question... here is my input:

Using the 59 as a reference point, the C/59 Hybrid has a very similar tone with an added quality I can only describe as "strength" or "punch"...
The high and mids sound stronger with more body than a 59...
This is a quality that the Custom Custom and JB have as well, but they suffer from compression which gives your tone less character and masks the dynamics of your individual playing style and the acoustic tone of the instrument.

The Lows retain clarity because of the mis-matched coils and take on an almost P-90/Overwound Tele quality to them... makes sense that my other favorite bridge pickups are the Phat Cat and my Custom Shop 9.5 Broadcaster... the Twangbanger gets a nod as well!

I DO NOT recommend a Ceramic magnet in the C/59, but the thin Ceramic from the Custom sounds great in the C/JB Hybrid if you are after a more aggressive tone, although, I prefer that specific Hybrid with an A5.

Pete....Your explanation really nails what I heard last night using the A5 Hybrid in my Love Rock Les Paul....The A5 in this guitar is what it really needed..I Loved the tighter tone, the output was stronger, the lows were stronger, and I picked up more of the highend I lacked...I actually liked not having to peg my bridge tone control on 10 all the time and instead I found myself rolling the tone back a bit...The A5 Hybrid was also very clear and articulate for me.Both my drummer and bass player said they heard a crispier tone, but that they heard all the notes played, and this was both clean and with gain....I normally like the A2 magnets in my bridge position, but not in this Love Rock...I also agree that this combination gives us a nice tight punchy tone, but it also stays clean and clear....Noise just doesn't seem to be any issue with my Hybrid also...I'm happy and I played a level above myself last night because the tones were there..Thanks again..

Re: Question For Bachtorock..Hybrid C5 And Stock 59?

IMHO, the stock C-5 sounds great in the bridge a Les Paul.
For the neck, I like the PGn.

Re: Question For Bachtorock..Hybrid C5 And Stock 59?

The stock C5 and the CC are great pickups... the C/59 Hybrid is just one step beyond!
Yes, the PG is my favorite stock neck pickup as well... I also use Hybrids... 59/Jazz and 59/APII in the neck.

Peter, what kind of amp/amps are you using?

Yeah man... isn't it nice to be able to fine tune the pickup to your instrument with a simple magnet swap! It's nice when the guys in the band notice the greatness of a spectacular tone... interesting... their comment about hearing ALL THE NOTES because that is one of my favorite qualities on the C/59... you hit a big G chord and every note and frequency seem to have equal say... kind of like the best of AC/DC's tones.

Re: Question For Bachtorock..Hybrid C5 And Stock 59?

This sounds really cool. Which bobbin do you use from each pickup?? Also, when putting them together again, do you need to wax them?? I might have to start trying some of this stuff.

I have a whole bunch of amps, but my favorite ones are my Fender Tweed Deluxes, Brown Deluxes, Blond Bassmans, Marshall 66 JTM45 and Studio 15... modern amps I own and like are the Fender Professional Series TWIN, the Peavey Delta Blues 2-10 and I also use a POD PRO with a BRYSTON 3B-SST power amp.
I am a total AMP JUNKIE!

When you reassemble the pickup you just need to hit it with a hair dryer for a few minutes from all directions and the existing wax will reset in all the nooks and crannies.

I use 2 Hybrids...The one in my strat is an A2 magnet with the Custom's slug bobbin and a PGB screw bobbin..

The one in my Love Rock is an A5 magnet(was A2) with the Custom slug bobbin and a 59B screw bobbin...

The Hybrid in my Love Rock has a nickel cover on it and the one in my strat is uncovered....

Just like Backtorock,I've done the hairdryer trick just long enough to get the wax looking like runny water...I've had 0 problems with both Hybrids and they are great pickups in the right setup!
