question for Evan

Maybe this has been talked about before, and if it has if someone would post a link to the thred that would be fine, and Im sorry...if not

What are the big differences between the Dimebucker and the Bill Lawrence that Dime was using. I know that the pup Dime used was not a standard production pickup (he called it an L500XXL). Also (if you know) how would those 2 pickups campare to a standard Lawrence L500XL? I know it's not your thing to keep up with other people's pickups, but it has been a topic here lately, and I am just curious to know the differences.

Thanks

Re: question for Evan

wasn't it just overwound a bit? about 16k or something... makes sense, given the difference in XL and XXL (think of clothing sizes) ;)

im totally not sure here, but this is what i thought it was.. i await correction ;)

Re: question for Evan

I used to have a L500XL in a original Schecter PT it was very hot and very bright, it didn't stay too long in my guitar.

Re: question for Evan

Hey guys. I can't help much right now. But this definately sparked a MAJOR intrigue in myself. I'm currently gathering all the pickups to do an A/B/C/D comparison.

I had to practically beg to get a 500XXL, but it will be made. I already have a 500XL. I have a "fake" 500XL coming to me in a current trade and I'm scouting out for a cheap Dimebucker if I can find one.

I'm going to drop each one in the same guitar and try to do a basic recording of each. A couple scales, chords, maybe some noodling. Clean and Dirty.....I still can't quite figure out how to get a good recorded sound, but I'll be posting some "help me" topics when the time comes!

Re: question for Evan

WOW!!!! Bill and Becky are making you a 500XXL? SWEET!!!!

Re: question for Evan

Sorry guys... I took the night off to go see a concert and didn't log on to answer any questions.... what was I thinking anyway?

The XXL was a moving target. It was Dime's nick name for the various pickups that were wound for him to try and get him his tone. There was not just one XXL. Each one was different. And none of them quite gave him his sound. That's why he came to us.

You can read more about Dime's tone quest in his interview on this site.

The last XXL Dime used had an alnico magnet. We started from there and changed the magnet (to ceramic), the wire, the number of turns, the pitch and other things, in order to arrive at the Dimebucker. They're totally different pickups.
