Question for the wiring gurus :-)

I have a strat with stock fender single coils for neck and mid position and a JB full humbucker in the bridge......the guitar has a 5 way fender mega switch(the one with the 24 poles) and the wiring is the classic
pos 1: neck
pos 2: neck+middle
pos 3: mid
pos 4: mid+ bridge
pos 5: Jb bridge humb

What i would like to achieve is keep these options and add one more......the ability to have selected one coil of the JB (the one closest to the bridge) with the neck pickup.........Does anybody have a wiring diagramm for this?? I presume a push pull pot is needed......anything else????I do not want to add any switches e.t.c

Re: Question for the wiring gurus :-)

this is gonna be tricky 'cus you are in essence asking for a 6-way functionality out of a 5-way switch ... it might actually require 2 push/pull pots (not sure about that yet) ... and you might have to go back to the stock 5-way switch to get it

what i am thinking about is the 'bridge anytime' mod on one push/pull and another push/pull to split the JB ... dunno if you can swing it so that one push/pull does both at the same time ... this of course would not only give you b=n, but also all three at once if you so desire ...

lemme think about it

Decided to delete this post since it wasn't really correct now that I see the Fender wiring diagram.

Correct pic to follow soon. (At end of thread.)

This is actually going to be much easier than I originally thought. I just gotta clarify one thing. Since you're using this with Fender singles, you have the JB reversed, right? (Green for hot, black for ground.)

I've got the diagram mostly done, I just need that last item confirmed.

that's right
cool, it's not what you said in your first post in this thread, so this clarifies things (for me at least)

artie's got it ... much easier now
good luck, have fun

Re: Question for the wiring gurus :-)

This will do what you want, but I see one potential problem:

fenderiarhs01.jpg

The original Fender diagram split the bridge when in the #4 notch position. (Middle & bridge.) I don't know which coils of the JB will be humbucking when combined with the Fender singles. That drawing gives you literally what you asked for. (Screw coil of the bridge when combined with the neck.)

If your new neck & bridge single position, and the original #4 position, are not noise cancelling, then we'll need to alter that diagram slightly.

I assume you can tell that the red and blue lines of the push-pull go to the red and blue terminals of the 5-way, respectively.

There is one difference between the diagramm you have posted(and i shall thank you again for doing so) and how my guitar is wired now.....on your diagramm the hot (from the JB)seems to be the green wire......in my guitar i have wired in the same place instead of the green the black wire and i have grounded the green and bare to the back of the volume pot.....

How does this change things????

It does two things:

1. It changes the phase of your JB relative to the Fender singles. If it sounds ok to you, then its no problem. Generally, Duncans need to be reversed to be in-phase with Fender singles. But not all the time, and I'm not sure which is which. You'll just need to use your ears.

2. That will also change which coils will be selected when split. Ironically, that will use the stud coil when in the middle/bridge position, and the screw coil when combined with the neck - which is what you wanted. So, I guess that will work out too.

Its just a matter of whether or not the JB will be in phase with your neck and middle.
