question for those wiring and pu experts.

I ordered a Bill Lawrence L500XL that should arrive pretty soon. It's going in my swamp ash N4 and this is a very bright pu apparently. Since my guitar only has a volume control and no tone it's a little tricky. I asked what I should do on the B.L. forum and this is what someone told me and he has the same guitar:

In the end, this is what I did. The N4 doesn't have a tone control, so I just added a 470k resistor in series with a 0.02 microF cap to simulate a tone control wide open and wired it between the input to the volume control (from the pickup selector) and ground. Works like a charm- rolls off the annoying highs and the pickups sound fantastic.

Can you guys explain your thoughts on this and tell me how to do it if you can. What are the opinions you have.
Thanks.

Why not just use a dual concentric pot, that way you can have both a volume and a tone control.

it seems like it would work, just add those to the output from the switch and ground on top of the pot. I would use the dual concentric pot myself

Re: question for those wiring and pu experts.

If I use the dual concentric pot then wont I need to drill a hole for another control knob? Or can I have tone and volume on 1 knob.

Re: question for those wiring and pu experts.

Two separate controls tht rotate about the same center. By the way, if you choose to go with the 470K fixed resistor, you can leave out the capacitor since it has no effect when the resistor is so large. Wire the resistor as you would have the series combination. Two knobs on one shaft are not really very convenient. Unless you really like to have a tone control and would use it a lot, it is not worth installing.

A dual concentric pot gives you two controls in one spot, no need to drill another hole.

Forgive the newbie questions, I don't have much install experience. The only thing I've done myself is install a set of emg's in one of my guitars before. So when I turn the knob does that affect the tone and volume at the same time with the dual concentric pot in there? I would want it to just change the tone or just change the volume at once.

Re: question for those wiring and pu experts.

A duak concentric pot is two pots stacked on top of each other with seperate controls for each. The volume and tone controls with work independently.
