Question for those with SSL-5/SSL-1/SSL-1 combo

For those of you who use this combo in your Strats, how do the pups transition one to the other? When going from the neck to middle to bridge positions, do the pups transition nicely, or does it sound like a different guitar, especially the bridge? Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

Good question. I am curious also please.

Re: Question for those with SSL-5/SSL-1/SSL-1 combo

If you get the height adjustments right, the transistion is transparent...Actually the SSL1s have pretty decent output on their own...When you switch over to the SSL5/6 in the bridge, you will not hear "alot" more output, but the tone is slightly darker in the highs..You also will notice more mids and a slight bit more lows...The SSL5/6 is just slightly beefier and one of the best SD bridge pickups...David Gilmour uses it also from my readings..

I don't like my sc pickups adjusted to close to the strings, and I find they work and sound better down a bit so the poles don't pull the strings and cause "stratitis"...

Another bridge favorite of mine,is the Twangbanger!

Re: Question for those with SSL-5/SSL-1/SSL-1 combo

Stratdeluxer97 is right. But I probably keep my ssl5 adjust closer than him. With an overdriven tube amp, the bridge definitely kicks it up a notch: BAM! But the pickups match nicely. It is tough to beat ssl1 in neck and middle. I even like them in the bridge.

And I also agree the twangbanger is another very excellent strat bridge pickup. My two favorites.

Re: Question for those with SSL-5/SSL-1/SSL-1 combo

This is THE reason I ditched the SSL-5...

It's a great pickup, lots of power and a cool tone but when I was using it I was using it with 2 SSL-1's and the middle/bridge and bridge settings on the switch sounded like a different guitar form the other 3 positions.

And I agree that a total set of SSL1s is unstoppable for the vintage/correct like strat tones..

+1. Transition is too much for my tastes between typical output strat pickusp.

Re: Question for those with SSL-5/SSL-1/SSL-1 combo

The Twang Banger has less output than the SSL-5 and the transition to SSL-1s in the middle and neck is more subtle than it is with the SSL-5.

Both great pickups for fattening the bridge position but if you are concerned about the transition the Twang Banger is your better bet, especially for cleaner playing.

I would say the transition is similar to a humbucker in the bridge. But it is a kick in my strat. It is definitely for solos and lead lines. And it sounds good with the ssl1 in the middle/bridge/position.

You guys that have known me for awhile, know that I Like more beef in that strat bridge position..I actually think that the Twangbanger edges it out a bit over the SSL5..

One of these days I need to try another SSL1 bridge pickup but with the G&L PTB system instead..

I have ssl1, ssl5, and twangbanger in the bridge of G&L PTB systems. I lower the treble pot capacitor value to .0082 and it never gets wooly or too dark. The PTB is the only strat config I use. You would love it. It gives every turn of the tone and vol knobs useful sounds.

I really like using a 250k pot in place of the 500k value, but I leave the stock cap on the bass pot...Tamed alot of the shrillness out of one of my strats...Leo used to voice stuff for more highend, from what I've read...

Re: Question for those with SSL-5/SSL-1/SSL-1 combo

I found my favorite combination by using the Surfer Custom and 2 Surfers. Then, I wire it with Eric Johnson/Jimmie Vaughan wiring - tone on bridge, tone on neck, and no tone on middle.

To me, it's a perfectly calibrated set, and I can control the bridge's tone without effecting anything else. The Surfer Custom is still voiced like the other two, but has a bump in output....actually 9.7K.

So, if you've already got SSL-1's, you might consider a Surfer Custom bridge as the most hot vintagey option.

Re: Question for those with SSL-5/SSL-1/SSL-1 combo

Yes the SSL1s are a little over the top compared to the 57/62s or a "correct" sounding single coil...

I just choose to use what sounds good and works for me.. ;o)

I think SSL-1's are GREAT for Strat players that use big amps, especially BF/.SF Fenders that lack midrange content but into sub 20 watt tweed and brown combos that have more midrange content that I need or want.

That is exactly what I don't want. Thanks all for the input.

If you are saying that the SSL5/6 is like transitioning to a humbucker like tone,I totally don't agree!

The SSL5 isn't a high output pickup, volume wise it matches up with the SSL1s,Fat 50s etc...It has more mids,is ballsier, and has less highs than the SSL1...Still an A5 poled pickup that works great in the bridge of a brighter/thin toned strat...It doesn't do what a bridge position humbucker does though.

I have used the SSL6 for many years and in several strats...For me,just a great pickup...And then the Twangbanger came along as a tie.. ;o)

Re: Question for those with SSL-5/SSL-1/SSL-1 combo

Very helpful info folks! Thank you.

Re: Question for those with SSL-5/SSL-1/SSL-1 combo

It's really not anywhere like a humbucker but yes, the SSL5/6 is very compressed and much different from a vintage class Strat pickup.

It also hums quite a bit more.
