Question for you guys, od stuff!

Made a medium fat gain od pedal today, for our new 9v line.
It is configured like our normal HDB's layoutwise, a drive and a cleanboost at the end.
From there it has little to do with our normal line soundwise.
This one is warm and fat, can go from little drive to a solid singing drive, I made sure that the bottomend does not drop out of it, not a thumping one as the Plexitone has, but a more lowmiddy one.
It is much more coloured soundwise than the other drives, I went for a darker and more creamy sound, works well on most ampses, likes singles and humbuckers , anyways the boss likes open crispy sounding stuff, hehe so I am going to convince him that we need a warm and a more liquid drive, rooted in old traditions but with some more range to it.
To him a Plexitone is highgain;) To me that is a vintage sound with that small extra kick, same deal with this one, just less gain and a darker sound, still with clarity and good defenition, and it does come out of the speakers with a good punch.
Does that sound anywhere appealing to you guys??
I liked the sound alot, I forgot to take the pedal home today, and will not get to work before monday again, so no clips right now.
Some input would be awfully nice:)

It does sound appealing to me. A bit of range is a nice thing to have, it always makes a new stompbox easier to justify, at least to the wife! Just make it so that it's easy to take advantage of the range in a gig situation. There just isn't any sense in some small step-ons in the weirdest of places, like on the T-Rex Mudhoney. That's a good way to kill off the versatility, IMO.

Re: Question for you guys, od stuff!

I love the idea. I'm always looking for fat, creamy, singing lead tones. I'll buy one (and probably a Plexitone for rythm). :burnout:

P.S. Does it clean up when you roll down?

Re: Question for you guys, od stuff!

Might be just the thing to calm down an overly-bright guitar, but I'm not a fan of the band-aid approach, myself.

A chunkier/darker OD might also go well with a small combo or practice amp, both of which can be lacking balls as well as being beamy.

Re: Question for you guys, od stuff!

I said it was darker than our usual drives, but it is still pretty clear, on the big fat Hiwatt it was simply being creamy and fat, but the Plexiton is that too on that amp;)
So that is just how that amp sounds, on the brit voiced combo with a single V30, the sound was like a dark plexi head, it still has some of that British bite but a more dark and fluid one, sounds very nice with humbuckers too.
It is not muffled like tubescreamers and fulldrives, those always sounds like somebody dropped a blanket over the speakers.
I do not dig that much:D

Hm i find that a TS like pedal takes away muffle in a high gain setup...weird

Re: Question for you guys, od stuff!

Sounds interesting, Rid. It's hard to make an honest opinion off words with no sound. The ultimate would be playing one through my own setup. ;) But like everything else you come up with, I'm sure it sounds great as always.

I'm not in the OD pedal market per se but I always like to play/hear what's out there. And I like playing with OD circuits on the breadboard. It's fun tweaking things here and there looking for that magic sound in your head. :)

Re: Question for you guys, od stuff!

Will get it home next week.
I kinda hope to get this one through as well, our drives of the past has been slightly too transparent for my tastes, I like alittle more tone/colour:)

Re: Question for you guys, od stuff!

I think it's good for Carl Martin to have a lot of tonal variety in their line, but since there's so many already, CM just needs to fully describe the differences between each one, so the buyer knows exactly what to expect. Now, it's a little too vague......like examples of guitarists are needed to point the buyer towards the right CM pedal.

Re: Question for you guys, od stuff!

Niels,
if someone says, "fat and warm", I'm interested.

if you add "creamy" and "good bottom" even better

if you were to say "lots of harmonics" better still

the transparent drives have their place I'm sure, but especially for us strat players, there's nothing wrong with some coloration to make leads stand apart from rhythm

go for it

Re: Question for you guys, od stuff!

I hear you once again Joe:D
Yep some pedals are probally going to dive down under the radar soon.
The HDB line is really a strange one, the trouble is that our boss sometimes loves colourless and to me slightly thin drives, very natural and crisp and detailed, but ultimatly too weak, due to the need of a very good amp that is not playing at very low volumes!
But we have steered him towards new times, slowly but with a sure hand, the Plexi was the first step, now the Vox like pedal is coming up, those are pretty defined overdrives.
Yeah Curly, good harmonics too:D
It made my 1x12 brit combo play with a good classic drive, not thin or weak, fat vintagy like sounds.
I am oldschool that way, less buzz and more tone is my preference.
Hehe anyways I think that I will sway him in the end, it is just a matter of good argumentation for the sounds usefulness, it does sound good with both PAF style humbuckers and trad singlecoils and P-90's.
