I was wondering what pickup positions did Hendrix mainly use? His tones seem bright to be the neck or the neck / mid position. I'm thinking it's the bridge mid combo he's using, especially on "Hey Joe" and "Little Wing". Srv's instrumental cover of "Little Wing" sounds to be the bridge and mid combo and then just the neck in certain parts of the song. Am I right with this? Does anybody have additional info on what P/U positions Hendrix and SRV used in their songs? Also, how did they combat the massive amounts of hum from using od pedals and fuzz pedals? Do they simply play in the hum-cancelling positions when using high gain?
The single coils on my strat are very dark and bassy. My neck pickup can easily get muddy. Sounds great for jazz, but with distortion it farts out. My neck mid combo is almost unusuable except for a really dark rhythm tone. My mid pickup alone sounds like what most neck pickups on other strats sound like. MY single coils are very weak (5.5k) and have a very hollow, glassy tone. There is an almost total absence of mids.
I get a lot of compliments on my clean tones because it's soo different from the normal single coil sound. Very round on the bottom end and just a hint of sparkle. The clean is very full and chimey with a lot of round bottom end, with no quack that single coils are usually known for (think of a rounder, more bell like Jazz neck humbucker). The overdrivin sounds however, gets muddy and farty because of this.
These single coils are of a "no name" manufacturer... so it's probably cheap heh. The pickups use a bar magnet under the bobbin as opposed to having actual magnetic bobbins. I use 500k tone pots in my strat. I am partial to the clean tones because it's so mellow and round. I get more compliments on my tone with these pickups than anything else... I just wish they'd sound better overdriven.
