Question: Pedalboard patch cables

hydro

Prayin' to Cheeses
So I need to get a more compact pedalboard layout and am close, but the right angle plugs take up 5/8" of real estate each. I'm considering Lava cables with the mini plug heads. I emailed the company but the guy didn't answer my question about whether the mini plug heads are actually smaller than regular right angle or pancake plugs. Maybe he thought my question was corporate espionage...lol.
Anyway, does anyone have experience with these lava cables? Do they really have a lower profile?
I also asked what their advertised cable lengths meant - plug tip to plug tip or cable length without heads and got the cryptic reply, "we cut cable to the length ordered". Well thanks but that really doesn't answer my question and I don't feel like ordering $120 worth of cables to find out they are off my measurements.

And no I am not going to do those solderless kits or try to make my own cables because, honestly, I am completely electronically challenged and I know I will just botch it all up, and I can't imagine that the solderless thing actually works or that someone with absolutely no ability with tools could make them.

Re: Question: Pedalboard patch cables

The other thing that chaps my azz is that if you are a company that is advertising to guys with pedalboards who need to know exact measurements with very small tolerances, why would you not state clearly on your webpage a) the dimensions of your "mini" plug heads and b) whether your cable length includes the plug head or not.

Grrrrr....

Re: Question: Pedalboard patch cables

From what I read, the Lava ELC are slightly lower profile than George L plugs.. So if you connect enough plugs together you may save 1/2 inch.

On the other hand, George Ls are much easier to assemble

Pancakes are the lowest profile. Better yet, if you go on Amazon there are pancake plug kits with Evidence audio cable

Re: Question: Pedalboard patch cables

Pancake plugs do have the lowest profile.

However, they are significantly wider. That can sometimes play a part in how/where you place them on your board. Sometimes things are tough to line up, sometimes power supplies plug in on the sides next to your jacks and it gets tricky.

I've been using pancakes for a couple of years now, and i find myself wanting to get the mini lavas.

Re: Question: Pedalboard patch cables

I think I am gonna go for the Lavas and hope for the best. I do have a couple pancake type, like Sly linked to, and they work in some situations but they also can get in the way of other plugs and I lost one the other day because of how it was angled. Part of it is that I have a weird assortment of pedals and my Fulltone MDV-II is really weird the way the in/out are positioned, plus it has knobs and switches on the side of it...honestly, if it didn't sound so awesome I would have chucked it a while back because it is so hard to plan the board around. But it does sound great, may even be my favorite pedal.

When I get these in, I'll post and let folks know how it goes.

Re: Question: Pedalboard patch cables

I've been using a random mix of patch cables, but Lava ran a BOGO deal on his Ultramific mini ELC pedalboard kits yesterday so I finally pulled the trigger. I'm looking forward to cleaning up the rat's nest that is my pedalboard cabling.

I've GOTTA do that soon!

Re: Question: Pedalboard patch cables

I built 3 boards using George L cables. Never had an issue. I don't know which takes up more real estate but I only use a few pedals so its not an issue

Re: Question: Pedalboard patch cables

Got the Lava mini ELC cables in and rewired my board. These are excellent cables and definitely are lower profile than the regular right angle plugs. The cable heads are smaller overall and easier to work with, not much deeper than pancake cable heads. Very happy with them so far.

Re: Question: Pedalboard patch cables

Glad you like the Lava. I find that what generally causes them to fail is unplugging and plugging cables in. My board is in a carry case that the lid pops off. I have it screwed to the base. When I show up to play, I pop the lid, plug it in, hook up my cables and I am ready

I recently rewired my board with these, and I'm happy as well. I heard lots of horror stories of how difficult they were to assemble, but I didn't have any trouble.

Re: Question: Pedalboard patch cables

I ordered mine pre-made off the lava site, because I figured if anyone could botch up a cable kit, it's yours truly...

These really are excellent cables, it's a great design.
