I'm all in favor of experimentation, especially in cases like this where the modification is easily reversed. Nothing to lose but a little time.

The only issue/problem with this I have is that the pickup is new and I don't want to compromise its sale value. (and i cant do a Seymour Duncan return/swap deal on it cos I won it as a prize.)

Well, even 'new' you will take roughly the same hit on resale as selling it secondhand anyhow. Don't trim the lead, try it out them snip the soldered section off the end if you need to sell.
