Question regarding HB pickup cover removal

I read the SD article on adding covers to HB's after the fact, but I bought the wrong covers.

I'm about to replace them with the correct covers - any advice/warnings about removing the incorrect covers without damaging the pups?

I followed the instructions in the article (I used double sided tape, fairly thick, high strength though :smack:)

Thanks!

what article? i dont use any tape when i put covers on. i fit them tightly then solder the two spots to the base plate

Re: Question regarding HB pickup cover removal

The covers fit right? If so you have no need to change them unless there is an aesthetic or feedback related issue you suffer from.

Re: Question regarding HB pickup cover removal

I am assuming you put the tape on the top and have not soldered them yet. That being the case, you should be able to just pop them off.

Re: Question regarding HB pickup cover removal

They've already been soldered, but that's not a problem.

Obviously I have no choice but to simply try and pull them off, hoping the tape doesn't hold too well!

I just thought I'd ask before I do it, in case there were any caveats...:cool3:

So, how did it go? Still have all 10 fingers?

Re: Question regarding HB pickup cover removal

In the past I had tried the double sided tape thing, but I was still getting feedback issues. I knew the Seth Lover set was unpotted and wanted to know why it's relatively quiet for an unpotted covered HB, and read somewhere that they clamp the cover really tight before they soldering the cover. So I got a strong spring clamp, and clamped it tightly, soldered it, and it's been just fine ever since. If you go that route, don't forget to put soft cloth or something between the pickup and clamp to prevent scuffing and scratching.

Re: Question regarding HB pickup cover removal

With stock covered pups that are factory wax potted, the wax adds a slight vibration cushion between the slugs and the cover. Some double sided tape is too thin to accomplish this (there are some thin foam double sided tapes that work). But a better solution is to just use masking tape to cover the slug side. I have used masking tape (sometimes 2 layers) for many years without a problem, and it is much easier to later remove the cover (and the tape) than when I have tried double stick tape. I've tried wax potting on several pups, but it is too much work and too messy for me.

Clamping tightly works, but it tricky to get it clamped tight enough to accomplish the desired result without leaving dents on the cover. I much prefer the simplicity and safety of masking tape.
