Question regarding JB/Jazz polepiece spacing

I'm trying to find pup covers for these pickups, and I haven't found any with the right spacing.

I bought a set of 49.2mm from StewMac, and the JB just barely fits (but not really right). The Jazz is way short of the holes.

Duncan doesn't appear to sell any covers except for Trembuckers.

Help!:eek13:

Re: Question regarding JB/Jazz polepiece spacing

Nope, all I could find on the accessories page was covers for Trembuckers...I'll look again though!

Re: Question regarding JB/Jazz polepiece spacing

Thanks!

Just an update, though...I found them on SD's website, although I had to do a search to get them to show up.

Still have a question though:

Both eBay and SD offer one size, stating it will fit any of the "standard", non F-spaced pickups. However a quick check of the pickups shows that the JB and Jazz are nowhere close to the same spacing. And I definitely don't have the Trembucker version of the JB.

How can one cover fit both pickups?

PS: Before this thread, I had already emailed SD, but have yet to hear from them...

Re: Question regarding JB/Jazz polepiece spacing

Seymour Duncan as far as I know only has two bobbin sizes, regular and "trembucker".

Post some pics if you can.

Re: Question regarding JB/Jazz polepiece spacing

I bought SD covers from eBay. Neck was 48mm and trembucker was 52mm, IIRC.

Re: Question regarding JB/Jazz polepiece spacing

SD has never offered covers in the old, Asian metric 48mm spread simply because they've never made p'ups with that specs.

Keep in mind that many in Santa Barbara were under a mandatory evacuation order because of the wildfires there, so if you email, expect a little bit of a delay.

What? Something is definately very wrong here.

Post some pictures of the actual p'ups or we won't be able to solve this puzzle.

Re: Question regarding JB/Jazz polepiece spacing

Thanks to all for your replies. I'll try and post pics when I can.

In the mean time, I'll probably just order new covers from Duncan, and assume they'll fit.

Re: Question regarding JB/Jazz polepiece spacing

I would recommend pics first incase (for some reason) something else is off, in which case you'll waste more $$ on covers that may not work.

Re: Question regarding JB/Jazz polepiece spacing

After measuring my pickups, both the JB and Jazz Neck are 48mm (48.8 to be precise). This matches the SD PDF with dimensions for the covers.

Seems odd that StewMac, Fralin Pickups, Allparts, etc. don't sell 48mm at all...I thought these pickups matched the normal industry standard for Les Paul humbuckers.

Oh, well...I ordered two covers from SD...all is good.

See, here's the thing: the polepiece spread on all SH is 49.2mm. So, either you don't know how to correctly measure the polepiece spread, or the p'ups you have are actually Di Marzio, which polepiece spread is 48.5 mm.

And as you haven't provide with pictures of the actual p'ups, I just can't help but wonder...

Then how do these fit? : https://www.seymourduncan.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/411290_Cover_6-String_HB.pdf

1.930" = 49.0mm

BTW: These pickups were purchased new, in the case, and have Duncan stickers on the bottom indicating the model.

I remeasured the polepieces center-to-center of the end poles. They measure 1.930, or 49.0mm, which makes sense.

I remeasured the StewMac cover holes and came up with 49.6mm, which explains why they don't fit. Confusing part is, the catalog indicated they were 49.2mm, and that these covers were the standard industry size for Les Pauls, etc.

Bottom line: the StewMac covers don't fit, and it looks like the Duncans will. End of problem!

Re: Question regarding JB/Jazz polepiece spacing

That's a new, golden Duncan cover. It even got the adhesive plastic foil attached to it.

StewMac site said:
Humbucker covers
Available versions:
1-15/16" polepiece spread (1.94"/49.21mm):
this vintage spacing fits our humbucking pickup kits.

2-5/64" polepiece spread (2.08"/52.71mm): modern wider spacing for the bridge position.

Unless you bought the wrong ones, the StewMac 1-15/16" spread covers perfectly fit the Duncan SH p'ups.
