Question with regards to Vintage P-90's

Hi guys,

First of all, I'm new to the forums and relatively new to electric guitars, so I sincerely apologize if my question has been already answered a million times in this forums.

My question is:
I just bought an Epiphone '56 Goldtop and I find that the P90 pickups on it are extremely noisy when I play the guitar infront of my computer and near my desk lamp. As I am constantly playing my guitar infront of the comp, to read off tabs, I was thinking of changing it to the Vintage P90's as they are the only Seymour Duncan P90's available in my local music shop. I would like to know if these set of "Soap bars" would help to cancel the noise or even reduce it.

do you happen to be australian?

the sd vintage p90s are true single coils, which happened to be the case for the p90s from your epi goldtop.

that said, true single coils do hum if you go near the monitor, tv, lights etc. to cancel hum, you'll need a humbucking p90 with either side-by-side coils or a stacked design.

other than that, its the duncan custom shop or dimarzio and emg. both dimarzio and emg builds humbucking p90s in a side-by-side configuration.

If you otherwise like the pickups, you might want to leave them in there, and change the problem. Perhaps consider an LCD monitor, as the big ol CRT ones are the problem. LCD screens will perhaps be kinder to your eyes etc.

If you want P90, Jason Lollar (lollarguitars.com), is the master of these. And i think he makes a hum cancelling version.... or get one reverse wound pup, sothat in the middle selection you will get a hum cancelling situation.

Also, if you enlarge the font onscreen, you can step back, a big difference

As much as the hum can be annoying...it's part of the charm of P-90's. I have Gibson P-100's (stacked hum cancelling p90s) - They just aren't the same.

Quality-wise the vintage P90s should be better than the cheap p90s in your epi right now. There will be noise, but that happens all the time, it may be reduced with Duncans. I have no problem playing in front of my computer. Just keep playing and you'll just hear noise when you stop. Also reducing the amount of gain you use helps.

Welcome to a great forum.

I had a '56 Epi Goldtop, loved the P-90's (still do), sold it to a very good friend as he was so impressed with it.

P-90's can be noisy (as you have been told several times by now) but they have such a huge, "fat" , unique tone.

You might want to consider putting new CTS pots, 3-way switch and a new jack in your GT someday. It won't change the hum/noise but the quality of the stock pots, etc. could be improved.

I'm trying to get a hum size P-90 type pup at the moment (SD Phat Cat) for my 335 copy.
