Question:

Are there any single coils, preferably Tele, that sound like a hot P-90 while still having a little twang to it?

maybe Harmonic Design or Fralin Steel Poles ... don't know for sure, though

I'm thinking a Quarter Pounder set...engine turned pickguard & control plate

ANYONE got any finish ideas???

Re: Question:

OH...and....what is or does "tapped" mean for Quarter Pounders?

I see that it lowers the resistance.....is it something you could use on a 5-way switch for the tapped at say 1-3-5 & full on for 2 & 4???

Re: Question:

Check out SK guitar specialties T-90. Also, the HD -S-90 referrenced above. both will give your P-90 tones with a bit of twang. The 1/4 lb'r, imo, does the P-90 thing, but does not do twang nearly as well as the T-90 and S-90. A very nice compromise is Dimarzio's VV Hot T. The best one I've found at doing both.

The "tap" is a lead coming out of the middle of the coil which you can use as the "hot" lead to the switch instead of the wire at the end of the full coil. (Wish I could remember which is white & which is red... ) Anyway, a tapped quarter pound has less output, more mid-range & lower mids, and less treble than a full power QP.

I've got a tapped QP with a "dial-a-tap" pot in the bridge of a Strat that I really like. I'm not crazy about the full tapped tone - weak & muddy - but there are lots of times when dialing down part way is great. Adds lots of flexibility in tone, especially when combined with another pickup.

As far as finishing goes, my first reaction to one of those bodies was "AWSOME!!!" The more I think about finishing it, the less I like it. How the heck are you going to sand and buff in those carved grooves? How do you avoid sand-throughs and/or buffing through on the edges of the grooves? Unless you can dye the grooves and then fill them with something clear, I don't know how to approach it.

Is there anything over on the Guitar ReRanch forum or the Tele modders site about finishing these bodies? Maybe ButNut has an answer...

Re: Question:

Hey Chip, thanks!!!

Yeah, the finishing is gonna be a chore & I'm no quite sure how to approach it yet. I was thinking of something like Gibson did with the Voodoo models: use a dye underneath & the top thin enough to let that color come thru.

Maybe a faded orange-yellow flames coming out of a faded black denim, kind of hot-rodded. Engine turned pickguard & cover plate...find the guy that did those piston knobs on Wattage's "Flame Thrower".............

Not a lot of room for error :D

I've got a few:smokin: #1 paint the flame a light translucent amber, Then the body a opaque color of your choice. #2 (Classic flames) paint the flames pearl white, airbrush yellow fading into orange on the flame tips. The possibilities are endless. :D

Sounds great.....when can you have it done???!!!:laugh2:

I highly recommend the tapped QP set for tele. Full and fat, almost has humbucker power, and still retain a little of the tele flavor. Tapped, they are weaker than the full QP (duh) but I wouldn't go so far as to say that it was weak and muddy. However, I wouldn't compare them to a hot P-90. The output is there, but it's an entirely different flavor of tone.

For the finish, I think it'd be cool to trans color the flames in either amber of red, solid color the reveals a contrasting color, and clear the rest.

Re: Question:

Hey Mike, glad ya' chimed in.

So...how do you run the "tap": push/pull or 5-way switch?

I think I'd like the variety it offers, but I'm not quite clear on how it works & how I'd use it.

Maybe a 5-way switch wired:

1) bridge full
2) bridge tapped
3) bridge/neck tapped OR full???
4) neck tapped
5) neck full

MAYBE??????????

use a superswitch with push/pull pots. you get tapped, series, parallel, out-of-phase etc. the possibilities are limited by your imagination!

Re: Question:

Hi Terry -

The simplest approach would be a 3-way selector with either a 2-pole/double-throw toggle switch (or push/pull) that switched both pups to full or tapped.

Next would be push/pull switches on both the volume & tone knobs to switch the pups independently.

You could do what you laid out with a 4-pole/5-way megaswitch, but beware that you may have to route out the side of the control cavity to get that bugger to fit (I was lucky enough to figure that out before I started finishing a Tele body).

You might also consider one of the 4-way selectors that add bridge/neck in series. Do that with 2 QP's and you'd have one beefy tone :)

Standard 3 way switch (wired traditionally). I have two DPDT push/push pots. Volume taps bridge, tone taps neck. The full on version of both pickups (middle position) is very beefy, and very rude (in a good way). This wiring scheme gives me the option to have one full QP and one tapped QP, either switching between the two or using the middle position.

Switching from the tapped neck (rhythms) to the full on bridge (leads) is like getting punched in the face without making any other modifications to settings. Great variety.

You could use a superswitch to increase the tonal possibilities, but what I just spelled out gives you a lot of versatility. And Chip’s right… the control cavity of a tele is tight enough as it is… add the DPDT pots and a little more wiring and things get that much tighter. I’m not sure you could do a superswitch without doing a little working. Maybe someone else can chime in regarding the superswitch in a tele.

Re: Question:

Mike & Chip, thanks again........I think I was making things a little more difficult than it has to be. Mike, your wiring sounds like something I'd be looking for:beerchug:

Re: Question:

Just imagine 2 DPDTs (one for each pickup) instead of the one as shown. It's the same diagram I posted here a while back to make sure I had it right before I went crazy with the soldering iron.

Re: Question:

Hey Terry,

I'd go for either the Tapped Tele Hot or the Tapped QP...but I wouldn't bother with mini switches or push/pull pots. I'd keep it real simple and just use a five way Strat style switch.

With the Tapped Tele Hot you'll get:

1. Hot bridge pickup
2. Hot bridge pickup and neck pickup combined
3. Neck pickup
4. Vintage bridge pickup and neck pickup combined
5. Vintage bridge pickup

You'll get a similar thing going if you go with the QP.

I don't like mini switches and push/pull pots...just more stuff to go wrong and wear out.

Re: Question:

Hey Lew.....glad you chimed in too!!!

Honestly, I'm not a fan of push/pull pots either & initially was thinking the 5-way switch would be the simplest method, seeing I'm no pro at this :D

I think I'm gonna go with the 5-way....and if it's not what I'm looking for, I can always swap things out!!!!:laugh2:

Here's to everyone....thanks for the group "Brain Picking" session:beerchug:

Lots of options, but 1st things 1st: I've gotta figure out out to finish it:smack:
