questions about custom and body wood

okay i am actually posting this for a friend of mine, Aaron. You all know me well enough to know i like my stuff to sound vintage, but he likes a very modern sound. I am not competent enough to talk to him about a more modern sounding pickup combo cause i haven't used them much.

so the questions are, who has used a duncan custom in the bridge of an ash guitar? what value are your pots? i would also like to know what neck pickup to use with it to continue on with that modern sound. what do you guys think? i thought a duncan distortion might be nice in the neck position.

I think the owner of the guitar usually plugs into a cranked up marshall amp with only a few effects, but i don't know which ones right now. thanks for your help

Re: questions about custom and body wood

i have played a custom in an ash body with a 500k pot and thru the right amp (a cranked up marshall qualifys) will give you a nice tight focused tone. it didnt have a neck pup but i think something like a full shred neck would be cool. a ddn could work as well but you'd probably have to keep it a little low

Re: questions about custom and body wood

I love the Custom I have in a mahogany Yamaha with a maple neck. I find that the Jazz pairs up very well with the Custom. Is his guitar bright sounding acoustically?

If so, I'd go with the Custom Custom, or perhaps 250k pots.

BTW, I think that you might also like the custom. Sure it's pretty high output and aggro, but it has quite a bit of a vintage flavor. ;)

Re: questions about custom and body wood

i don't know yet, it is for a custom guitar.

i think there will be some experimenting with the pot values and maybe even the pickups depending on the brightness of the guitar. since the guitar isn't made yet, it makes it even harder for us to figure this one out.

Re: questions about custom and body wood

thanks for the help scott
my customer already has one of my single cutaways and now wants a double cutaway
so i'm thinking of throwing a custom in the bridge of whatever it is because he "wants more feedback"
current' he's gota JB int he bridge and a 59 in the neck
his only compliant is that hte tone is a bit too vitage

he plays emo/puny/rock
through a dsl 50

next guitar is either all mahogany or ash body

cheers and thanks

Re: questions about custom and body wood

I've tried a 59, Blues, and a CC (I think) in my swamp ash hardtail strat. I haven't tried a Custom, but I think it would work pretty well. I've tried Custom and Blues in a mahgoany Floyd strat, and I'm extrapolating from that.

I'd say go with the Custom and buy an A2 and an A5 magnet from Torres engineering. If the Custom doesn't work out, you can swap magnets and turn it into a CC or C5. If the Custom does work, at worst your out an extra $13 (plus shipping) for magnets.

Re: questions about custom and body wood

If the guy wants to bypass all the stuff obviously marketed for metal and get something that'll sound great into his DSL, point him in the direction of the C-5 or CC.
The C-5 has a big tight bottom and the rest sounds fairly vintage yet modern.
The CC packs a nice big wallop through any Marshall and has a slightly thicker sound.
The Custom is also great, but I personally prefer the other 2.
I'm like a cross between you and your friend. I love my vintage tone to be vintage, but I like my modern sounds to feel like a ton of bricks. Those 2 pickups ride the line.
