Questions About New Duncan 59/Custom Pickup

Hello everyone, newbie here, just got done registering on this forum :)

I have a bunch of gear and guitars but only have 2 guitars with Seymour Duncans in them, korean Epi Les Paul Custom with the SD Hot Rodded Set JB/Jazz and a custom built super strat that has a single JB with push/pull Alpha 500K volume pot, squier body (don't know what kind of wood the body is made of?) was told it might be Basswood or Alder? The Epi, custom built super strat and my Charvel Model 5fx all are setup for Drop B tuning right now for my original modern metal band. The Gibson Les Paul Special came from the factory with the P-100's, it's setup for 1/2 step below E tuning and has a Dimarzip p90 super distortion in the bridge.

I have some questions about the new Duncan 59/Custom that just came out? Would this be a good pickup for modern metal and other styles as well too? My Charvel is the only guitar I have with active EMG's and what I was thinking was maybe swapping the trembucker JB in the super strat with squier body with a Duncan 59/Custom, keeping the push/pull pot in it and putting the trembucker JB in the bridge of Charvel with Poplar body and getting a nice sounding single coil for the slant neck position for it? Any thoughts?

IMO the 59/Custom is a little better at the classic rock side of things, but it's very versatile and will do metal - just expect it to still have a quasi-vintage vibe no matter how much gain you hit it with (not like that's a bad thing). :approve:

Re: Questions About New Duncan 59/Custom Pickup

for starters, JBs are awesome in poplar if you're going for a high gain hard-rock sound. the Hybrid will do it too, but I cannot speak toward 'modern' metal - but I do know a cat that has ran the Hybrid through it's paces on some fairly edgier metal material, and he claims it hold up better than some of the vintage/classic guys would expect. what I can say about the difference between the JB that you have been playing and the Hybrid is that the JB will have a little more gain going on if you are looking at those super-long sustained notes. but for riffing around, you're not going to go wrong with either. the JB is a little more modern and the Hybrid is a little more open.

Hey man. i´m after those super-long sustained notes you said the jb can give, so how do you thin it could perform on a basswood rg?.

Cheers.

Re: Questions About New Duncan 59/Custom Pickup

depends on the guitar. there are a more factors than just the pickup to consider.

Re: Questions About New Duncan 59/Custom Pickup

Sorry to resurect an old thread, this was my 1st post on the forum haha! I saw one video on youtube of a guy Kevin Morrow that was trying a bunch of different SD humbuckers metal style but was wanting to see if anyone else here has used the 59/custom hybrid in drop tunings?

I know some guys on the RT forum were saying the SD distortion with a cool rails in the neck single coil slot might be a good choice for my Charvel Model 5fx in drop B tuning too.

The hybrid will definitely hold up for metal, even the tuned down stuff. I have one in a Les Paul and it stays bright, tight and clear no matter what I throw at it. That said, I haven't tried it in a charvel/jackson type axe although I'm sure it'd be fine, although I LOVE the JB style pickups in those guitars. I think you are on the right track in considering a distortion though: tighter than a JB and wicked aggressive!

Yea I have 3 of my guitars setup for drop B for my original modern metal band right now: my korean epiphone LP custom, it has the SD hot rodded set JB/Jazz, the custom super-strat bolt-on maple neck & maple board I think basswood body, it has a single SD JB Trembucker vintage tremolo tightened up so it doesn't move and then my Charvel model 5fx which has the emg's in it. I'm kinda not liking the JB in the super-strat (any suggestions?) it's really lightweight body, was thinking of maybe trying to find another body like maybe a jackson king v body or something more suited for modern metal without breaking the bank.

I'm wondering if I should get a 59/Custom Hybrid Trembucker for the Charvel along with a cool rails or hot rails for the neck for nice clean sounds and leads?
