Questions about the Invader pickup

So I want to put in Invader pickup into my Strat (I love playing pop punk and alternative mostly), and I was told that this pickup is musically great as long as it's far enough from the strings.

My question is, if the pickup is low enough, will it sound somewhat decent clean on the clean channel, but when on the over drive channel still beefy, mid-ranged and crunchy?

Also, would the Invader sound good coil tapped?

I have one of these (bridge)on a Tom Delonge Strat, it only has a volume control, so I can't speak about tapping.....

It can sound really nice clean....

My amps are single channel tube amps but I can find a "sweet spot" amp setting where I am able to turn the guitar volume up for nice distorted tones, then get some good cleans by simply backing it down.

The trick with the Invader is that it sounds good with the coils in parallel. It is about the only pickup fat enough to do that, apart from the P-Rails maybe. That will give you very nice clean sounds for fingerpicking and the like.

I don't think you have to move it far below the strings.

The Invader is not aggressive or overly spiky at all. It is just incredibly fat and warm. (coils in series).

Thanks! That definitely does help. Elitists on Ultimate-guitar always talk too much sh*t about the Invader, and they always say that it's a "mud machine" and that the clean sound can only sound like a crunch.

It depends on the axe and rig as well.

You are playing a long scale guitar which is bright. A darker short scale guitar like a Les Paul might not be a good fit for an Invader.

Your amp would be a factor as well.

I remember hearing that it sounds basically like a PAF in parallel?

I use an Invader set in my SG Standard, and run through a JCM 800 2204... it sounds fine ! It's alot different than other pickups, as long as you adjust your amp, there wont be any issues with clarity, even in a whole step downtuning... and if it's the sound your looking for, you'll pissy your pants ! Go for it !

it really is a great pickup. just look at all the people who have used them. tom delonge, lamb of god, avenged sevenfold. it can cover a very wide range

i'd bet it'd beef it up. didn't randy rhoads use them for a short time in his V's? i know the RR3 comes Detonators which is a Duncan Designed Invader.
