Questions for pedal junkies...

Sorry for the long-winded post:

I've always tended to shy away from running too many pedals before my amps because I was worried about tone and noise. I've been running Dunlop Crybaby Wah -> Dano Daddy-O -> Dano Cool Cat -> Dano Dan-Echo -> Traynor Custom Blue 50 or Traynor YCS100. I've been fairly happy with my sound, as far as non-boutique pedals go. The Dano metal pedals have held up to years of gigging. Yeah, I know... I say I'm worried about tone and then use Dano pedals. But they really aren't that bad. And the Cool Cat Chorus is my favorite chorus pedal of all-time.

Last weekend my Dano Daddy-O overdrive bit the dust. When switched on it just makes the sound go very "dark" and mushy. It used to be like a slightly bright TS9 when switched-on. So I don't know what happened there.

Anyways... a friend dropped off his TS9 and Boss GE7 EQ for me to put on my pedal board. The TS9 was a no-brainer and will do until/if I am able to repair my Dano. I've actually had the TS9 in my board several times before and opted for the Dano because it has more EQ functions and sounds similar to me. But for now I am stuck with the TS9 regardless. But I'm not sure what to do with the Boss EQ. It has no mods done to it and it noisy. But only when turned on. I tried an upside down curve on it with the mids boosted and kind of like the violin tone I am able to dial in for lead work. But I'm not sure if it's worth it since the pedal is so noisy and may affect my overall tone even when off. What say you pedal guru's about that? I am running it last in the chain after the Dan-Echo. Is that the place for it? Would I be better off running the EQ in the effects loop?

I do want to get my pedal board up to snuff in the next year, so I do plan to get some better quality effects down the road, but this'll have to do for this summer's gigs. Besides upgrading my pedals later-on, I am also considering the options of replacing it all with a Vox ToneLab LE or getting a TC G-Major and using it through the loop. Any input on any of my ramblings is very welcome and appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Questions for pedal junkies...

The Boss EQ is probably my favorite lead boost ever. Leave it flat (maybe a small boost at 800 & 1.3 or something) but basically flat EQ, and just "more" level.

Not changing the tone much, just kicks the amp a LOT harder.

The noise factor will vary with where you have the level slider set. My rhythm guitarist uses one. He also has an NS-2 to reduce the noise, which it does.

Thanks Moose. My problem is that my YCS100 head has an adjustable-level boost that works on all channels. So I can get that clean, LOUD boost at the tap of a footswitch. So what I'm looking for from the EQ is either that violin tone ala Eric Johnson for lead work, or I could dial it in for when I run piezzo stuff (I don't go into the board for most gigs, so I have to make my electric rig work for acoustic stuff. I only do that for two songs BTW.)

Re: Questions for pedal junkies...

I'd be more inclined to change out the Boss EQ pedal and TS-9 with something that incorporates both functions into one pedal like the Wasabi Overdrive or the Jekyll and Hyde. Unless you end up totally hating those pedals there's likely something in there that'll work for you. The Wasabi is just frighteningly customizable.

I use the EQ on the front end of wound up Marshalls or old-Fenders, much like a boobscreamer but w/o the "tone change" that comes with it... I also set up OD pedals with the level wound up & dirt WAAAAY down. Not trying to get more gain from the pedal, but more from the amp.

EJ style 'violin' tone? Gotta get more gain in there, maybe a fuzz face or similar on a wound up amp.

Sounds like a blown capacitor; if it's what you like, get another one.

Re: Questions for pedal junkies...

Stick the EQ after the overdrive and before the delay and chorus. If you are satisfied with the results (I love euqalizers), consider getting the Danelectro 7-band graphic EQ ("Fish n Chips", I think). The people who use that really like it.

Re: Questions for pedal junkies...

I use my eq early in my chain, after the wah, but before everything else...

Re: Questions for pedal junkies...

Consider the "Sniper" mod for the GE-7, or the Fish & Chips. As far as the other Dano is concerned, check the switch. I was not impressed by them, and it sounds like an old Phase 45 I have with an intermitant switch, sometimes it's full, sometimes it's not.

Re: Questions for pedal junkies...

I've used only a few OD pedals over the years. I currently have a Ts9 modded by StratDeluxer97 and I also have a Monroe drive made by Xssive. The modded Ts9 is a great pedal. I can get some really great tones out of it. The Monroe drive has more options and the tone has a little more clarity to it. I am using both and I will continue to do so. I use 2 amps so right now I am running the Ts9 into one and the Monroe drive into the other. These are 2 of the best sounding OD pedals I have used. (I'm sure there are some other great sounding pedals out there I just haven't used them). Here is a link to a review of the Monroe drive I wrote after I first got it. Its a pretty awesome OD.
