Questions?

Hey guys I got a gibson 498t in my 91 les classic hoping to get the sound my buddy gets out of his les paul studio silverburst. For some reason his is much clearer and it brings out the pick attack really well.My guitar sounds alittle scatchey or noisy and I use a gate.Is it possible that maybe I have to replace some electronics inside the guitar?Maybe where his is 9 months old and my is 20 his electronics are in good shape?I dont know if anyone has ideas I would appreciate it.

Re: Questions?

Which pickups does he have in his les paul studio silverburst? Are you testing the guitars through the same cable, amps and effect (if you have any)?

He has the 498t in the bridge like I do and it is a line 6 podxtlive through a atomic amp

Since you tested the guitar on the same amp and pedal a lot of other factors comes to mind. Such as;

Your strings, are they same? Are they both new? When was the last time you have changed them?
Are the both guitars setup same? Action? Nut and bridge construction?
Are the pickup heights same?
As Blueman mentioned pot values being different will change the way you guys sound.
Also the capacitor values used. High value caps might make your sound darker.

GUITAR QUESTIONS
What are the neck profiles of the two guitars?
Is one chunkier than the other?
What string gauges do each of you use?

SIGNAL PATH QUESTION
How do things compare when you do not use the noise gate?

I'll wager that some of your pick attack is being sacrificed to crossing the Threshold of your in-line noise gate device.

Re: Questions?

and classics have a thinner neck than any studio ive ever tried.

so you both have the 498T in the bridge. are the heights the same?

Re: Questions?

yeah, you gotta give us more info on how much you have done to eliminate variations between the guitars ... you need to use the same pot values ... the same strings .. same-ish setup .... the same pickup / pole piece heights .. the same amp/settings/etc ...

ultimately, you will have to get down to "what pickup will make your rig sound the way you want it to?" and not "why doesnt my rig sound like a different rig?"

and lets not forget the hands .. does your guitar sound more like his if HE plays your guitar?

good luck
