i was just dicking around recording and thought i'd get a quick snippet of all the guitars at my apartment. just kept the same settings for all of em, bass & treb at 8, mids at 10. and my TS9.

not a fair test by any means. just thought it'd be neat.

the one with the DD is especially not fair- its tuned to B and all the others are tuned to E :laugh2: i just played the same notes.

anyhow, vote on which you like best

its a tough call but the 500T just did it for me...

yeah, i think i'm stuck between the Super D and 500T. and i'm sure both would sound worlds better if the tone was dialed in specifically for each of them. but that is not the case. haha.

My votes were for the Super D (low mid "aunch"), 500T (high mid "aunch"), and I was impressed with Blackout neck too.

Overall 500T sounded best- thick, more balanced, tight, good bite, high mids were less edgy. Alot of people swap them out of guitars nearly immediately, but IME it's usually the GUITAR and not the pickup that is the issue with the 500T- in a truly good piece of mahogany the 500T is easily one of the best Distortion pickups out there- I had a faded V and a white Explorer where there was absolutely no need to change them cos they had killer wood, and I had 2 other identical guitars (faded V and white w/ebony board explorer) and the 500T gave the impression of sounding bad in those cos the wood was juts "ok". I have a couple clips on my soundclick of both of those good wood guitars and when I posted them people were surprised it was a 500T/496R combo in them.

don't know if it was fair or not, but the DD sounded awful.

i liked the 500T in my gibson, but it always seemed kinda muffled to me. in the LTD ex, which has a thinner/lighter body (though still mahogany) as well as a maple neck and 500k pots (vs. 300k in the gibson), its a perfect fit. i'm loving it in that guitar.

and yeah, the DD entry was just for the hell of it. not only is that guitar in B, but its got really light strings on it for that tuning (12-54) as i was doing some sludgy stuff with it earlier.

it really weirds me out that the JB sounds so much lower in output than all the others. and thinner. through a real amp, it works much better.

Super Distortion kicked them all IMHO. I'm not a Super Distortion fan, but this clip really sounded tight and chuggy with it. Second place goes to 500T

call me Ishmael, but the first 4 are not only the same pickup, but the exact same clip. only the last one is different.

ishmael.

Re: quick (crap) tone comparisons- JB, Super D, 500T, Blackout Neck, DD

they all sound the same to me the only one that sounded a little different is the black out

Re: quick (crap) tone comparisons- JB, Super D, 500T, Blackout Neck, DD

All of em sounded good, but the Super Distortion sounded best imo. Thick, saturated, meaty, articulate, but with more character than any of the other ones. 500T in second - sounded a bit more nasal than the Super D.

Oh my this is old.

*ps- Of all these, the Super D is the only one that remains in any of my guitars. In fact, I added one more Super D.

The JB andd DD duncans got soft at the very end when they ring out.

The Super D fixed this, and the 500T slayed it.

The blackout was dissapointing.
