Quick question NMV Marshalls vs. MV

I think everyone can agre that the Non master volume Marshalls have greater tone when cranked than a MV Marshall. I just have a quick question to ask you Amp Swami's, Would you agre that to get the truest representation of 70's/80's classic rock, that a MV Marsahll would be best? Im saying this cause isnt it true the Marsall rock in that period was played mostly on Master volume amps?
I have MKII100 watt MV Marshall head .I always wanted to hear a Plexi live, but from waht i gather, they are impractical since they cannot be cranked enough for the tone to florish.

For "most" 70's/80's rock I'd have to say a non master volume cranked balls to the wall to let the tubes shine. Then again, I guess it depends on really what classic rock from that era one is playing.

I agree with Jolly - Let it rip!

Re: Quick question NMV Marshalls vs. MV

I like both types of amps, but I like master volume amps more, since I can find that sweet spot at a pinpointed volume. NMV is cool in a loud rehearsal room with a bashing drummer, but that's the ONLY time you can utilize them.

I've even used 50W NMV Marshalls, thinking they'd be more tameable, but even those are too loud. Trying to get distortion by distorting EL-34's requires some serious volume!
That whole tone search led me to Bogner, who succeeded by making a preamp section that sounds natural, and a power section that always sounds cranked. At least I can capture the sound of a dimed Marshall, but scale it down to an appropriate volume.

Re: Quick question NMV Marshalls vs. MV

My experience with Marshalls tells me that when that Master Volume is at 10, and the the GAIN is running at 6-7--it's pretty much the same as a non-Master Volume amp.

One trick with the MV amps: Clip the brite cap on the GAIN control--now your tone will be more consistent throughout the range of the control.
