Quick wiring question

Hey, I'm about to wire my Warmoth VIP with my Jazz neck and Custom in the bridge both having coil splits, and I was just wondering which terminal I ground on the volume and tone pots because in the Seymour Schematics it says the left one, but then in alot of other wiring schematics i've seen they ground the right one. Sorry I'm new to wiring electronics, so any tips or help is much appreciated.

Re: Quick wiring question

look at the way the pot is oriented on the schematic. You ground the left if you are looking directly at the lugs.

A lot of other schematics show the actual view you see when looking down into the cavity at the mounted pots, so it can look different.

Re: Quick wiring question

You really shouldn't think in terms of "left" and "right". Think in terms of clockwise and counterclockwise. On a volume pot, looking at the back, you want to ground the CCW terminal. So, if the lugs were pointing straight up, you'ld use the left one.

A tone pot is a bit more complicated. (Or easier, depending on how you want to look at it.) You just need the wiper and one outside lug to act as a variable resistor between ground, the cap, and the hot wire. All of the following are electrically identical:

You can use any one, and it will work the same.

Jen - is it just the grounding lug that you are wondering about? There are two different ways to wire volume pots when you have one for each pickup.

This drawing shows "modern" LP type wiring. You can see Artie's point about grounding the counterclockwise lug on the volume pot pretty well. (ignore the switch for splitting the bridge pup - couldn't find a good drawing without it in a quick search)

I would recommend that standard wiring first, but you can learn a lot from wandering around the "GuitarNuts" website. Here's the so-called "50's" wiring, incorrectly labelled "Typical Gibson style wiring": 50's LP wiring Please notice that this drawing is done looking down on the pots - the posts are pointed toward you. This approach de-couples the two volume pots when you have both pickups turned on. You may prefer that, but it's not "normal". The GuitarNuts site is great regarding shielding a guitar, but that's not as important for a dual humbucker layout as for single coils.

StewMac's Wiring 101 may be useful too.

Hope this helps,

Re: Quick wiring question

Hey guys, thanks very much for the help, I successfully wired the neck (bridge arrives in a few days) and its sounding good except its got a fair bit of noise especially when split, so my next question is how do I get rid of the buzz? thanks for the help with wiring the pots!
